so, there's a whole lot of talk about hip hop on this site. fair enough, it's pretty much the genre of our generation. however, i don't think there's enough discussion re: the music that inspired (and indeed was used as samples in) hip hop music.
this is the thread in which you post the illest oldskool jams you listen to.
The Spinners
The Stylistics
Bobby Womack
Chris Kenner
Allen Toussaint
Buddy Miles
The Meters
Stanley Turrentine (If he counts)
King Curtis
Todd Rundgren
And of course a lot of the classics mentioned in this thread ( marvin Gaye, Al Green, Funkadelic, Bar Kays, Al Hirt)
Y'all heard of Shuggie Otis (son of legend Johnny Otis?) Dude is very underrated and rare. Very ahead of his time, doing stuff in the late '60 and '70 which really didn't come widely used until decades later. Cat did the original Strawberry Letter.

some great picks in here from everyone. stylistics, shuggie otis (i was stuck on that album for a while), mingus, herbie, chick corea, miles, coltrane... just what i was hoping for.
i was sad to hear that the greatest hammond organist ever died just the other day.
