Default St. John's Wort

has anybody tried this and have you noticed a difference in your mood? i suffer from mild depression/anxiety (sort of self diagnosed but i have done group therapy). do you think it will help and how long before i notice? i just got some for around $4 at wal-mart. i figured i'd give it a shot. i also suffer from migraines so if it can make any impact in that area...well worth it.

i know most studies are highly inconclusive so i don't want to be a victim of the placebo effect. any experiences out there?

A beautiful flower in the Rosid clade. I'm always excited to stumble across one while I'm out. Although I've never eaten it.

Dude, my depression sucks butt bc no antidepressant has worked, and i know it aint normal to feel depresses out of the blue even when you have good friends/life activites going on. Im add so i take adderall, it somewhat helps my mood bur only for an hour or two and the crash at the end of the day is not worth.it.

ONLY hydrocodone has truly elevated my mood, of course, opiod dependence and addiction is not something you want to mess with, however, with very limited use(once or twice every other week and the addition of a ndma antagonist like dxm or preferably memantine, you can be happy for a small period of time without high risk of dependency. But for everyday life, i have to resort to a healthy/balanced diet and happy music.

The person, not everyone reacts the same way.

ok, i figured that's what you meant.

i'll try to keep up with two pills a day and update ya'll in 2-4 weeks. i tend to get into ruts where i'm chipper for a day or so, then i'm just kind of down for the rest of the week. i guess i'm kind of manic in a way. my goal would be to level out and have more upbeat days. at worst, i'm out $4 and an experiment...not bad

natural supplements for depression? okay, here's some notes based on what i've tried:

st john's- didn't work for me personally when i tried it at a median recommended dosage. you should research mega-dosing with it, because my sense is that might be what's needed for most depressed folks.

5HTP- that showed some promise, but it was hard to titrate. got more from going off of it than i did from being on it.

sam-e -didn't do a thing for me at standard dosage.

fish oil- only thing it ever did for depression was to make the occasional weed trip a lot more potent.

kratom- i take this all the time since i'm currently between prescriptions for mood meds. about three teaspoons of the powdered form stirred in to a drink really boosts my mood for maybe half a day. it's sold legally in the US and works somewhat like opium, so it has that in common with the hydrocodone mentioned earlier.

final note: don't f--k around with depression. in other words, if you feel you have it, go after it aggressively. go see a professional. even if you're not covered by insurance, there are local state facilities for welfare-type people where you can be seen for free and get free prescriptions and even samples.

anyway, the reason i recommend not screwing around with depression is because it causes brain damage over time. more and more this is what the research studies are showing. specific areas of the brain that have been shown to shrink or lose potency are the hippocampus and prolateral prefrontal cortex. these areas have to do with cognition, emotion, attention-span, learning ability.

anyway, be well.

I've read that St John's Wort can cause cataracts in some people.

I tried 5-htp for five weeks last year, it didn't do anything for me except for a brief 'honeymoon period' at the start.

I eventually went down the prescribed medication route (SSRI's), which as highwhey says, is hit and miss and works for some people some of the time.

Wouldn't wish this shit (depression) on my worst enemy, be well fellas.

according to the WP article it works on mu-opioid receptors. in plain english, it works for me something like taking 10mg of adderall, but with longer-lasting effects. it's not been remotely habit-forming for me, either- i pretty much have to prompt myself to take it. also, like adderall, you can only take so much of it before you stop getting results. so IMO it's very hard, if not impossible, to OD on the stuff.

i like to take kratom with a 100mg caffeine pill (comparable to a medium cup of coffee) and do a 30-40 exercycle session to add to its effects. the endorphin-boost from the exercise really ties the whole room together.

i've been buying the powdered "bali" form from an online site called "speciosa specialists" for the last couple years, but there are plenty of other supplier sites and more detailed articles about the stuff all over the web.
