I have really only paid attention to college basketball the last 5-10 years, but the big one that surprised me was UNLV.

Yeah because it's a bullshit list with bullshit rationale. So are you gonna tell me Penn, Princeton, Purdue, , Murray St, Western Ky, Gonzaga have been better programs in the last 50 year than Illinois because they won their (weaker) conferences billions of times? I'll answer for you: NO.

Is Illinois a top of the line program along with Kansas, UK, Duke, UCLA, etc. No way but they are definitely not lower than those schools I just mentioned.

In my opinion, Illinois is somewhere below Ohio State but above Purdue. So I see them as the third best program and 18/19 when viewing them as an all time program.

I originally put Purdue in their not because they are in a weaker conference but because I feel they shouldn't be ahead of Illinois either. I just forgot to take them out of that group of programs I mentioned. Just a mistake but doesn't exclude the fact that I don't think they are a better program than Illinois. Especially that much better than what the list produced. They are 13 spots higher than Illinois.

What is the history of Temple basketball and why do they deserve the no. 18 spot? I'll let ISH educate me instead of google.

That's fine. 13 spots probably is too much, but it's what their (stupid) formula produced. I think they're remarkably similar programs.

They were talking about this on sports talk radio a couple of days ago (Arkansas) and mentioned why Arkansas was lower than fans think they should be. No idea how they did the scoring or whatever, but apparently they had them ranked really low (like 200s or 300s) from '62-'69 and in the 140s from '00-present. That 20ish year stretch from the mid-70s through the mid-90s, if you just looked at those, they'd probably be a top 15 or borderline top 20 program.

Really is sad that they've been this mediocre and bad for 15+ years now. So much potential to be a perennial top 10-15 program. The Nolan Richardson falling-out really set the program back big time, though. Should've had him still coaching until 2005ish with Mike Anderson ready to step-in and take his place the following season instead of having that decade long stretch where it was nothing but shit coaches and mediocre teams after Richardson kinda sorta got himself fired.

None of which has ties to the basketball program right now.

If it does? It wouldn't completely shock me. I bet nearly every major program has something similar. You always see recruits (particularly in football) go JC because of grades and then struggle to and extent there... Then miraculously they make the Dean's List at the university for the next 3-4 years.

There's a formula so I don't know how you can argue the results unless you disagree with the way they were come to. I am a little surprised how much separation UNC and UCLA have from 3+. And it's just sad that Indiana isn't with the rest of the blue bloods. One spot be it.

Kind of surprised Princeton is so high. And Murray State, who I honestly don't remember before the past couple seasons...

The rest seems rather accurate to perception.
