Lol Round Mound. That was Payton's team PERIOD. Kemp was FAR from their best defender or best player. Kemp became a solid-effective defender but Payton is a top 3 perimeter defender of ALL TIME and one of the best defenders ever. I don't give a shit what defensive win shares says, anybody with eyes who watched the Sonics knows that.
is he not the most athletic dunker in his time and did he not pave the way for prolific dunkers such as stacey augman, isaiah ryder et al to be successful in the NBA?

I'm not sure I'd say he paved the way for prolific dunkers to be successful. There were great dunkers who became good ball players before him as well as after. Further, Stacey Augmon is virtually from the same era, perhaps two years behind Kemp in terms of his arrival in the NBA. If Kemp couldn't play ball and could only dunk, he'd have been another Kenny Walker. I think it's the same with anyone else. The NBA's always welcomed prolific dunkers if they could play.
Of course, none of that takes away from the fact that Shawn Kemp is one of my favorite dunkers of all-time. Finding rare clips of his is like discovering gold.

I'd have to agree with your sentiments mate... plenty of good dunkers who couldn't/wouldn't understand the fundamentals of basketball... Shawn was able to rebound, dribble up cort and dunk coast-to-coast, so he's a compelte player IMO
if players like Augman, Ryder, Walker etc gone on and embraced the game as a whole rather than limit their game to one single play i.e the dunk - who knows where'd the end up!!!!?!?!?!?!
I'd say so. Alot of people compare him to Blake and young Amare because of their dunking prowess, but if you look at Kemp's ability to grab the rebound, go coast to coast, and finish with a sick jam, while looking comfortable and fluid doing it? Neither of those aforementioned guys have that in their arsenal.
In regards to his dunking he's the second best in game dunker all time after VC. His flair and showmanship was unmatched. Too bad you'rr not allowed to showboat anymore.

What? Blake runs coast to coast for a finish regularly and has as much handles and quickness as kemp.
