You can't "launch" into anyones head. But the defenseless rule applies only to QB, kickers and WR if I'm not mistaken. Not a guy chasing after a play.

During the broadcast Moose and whoever calls games with him were going over the rule saying defenseless player applies. Maybe they don't have a grasp on the rule book though, I'm trying to look up exact wording now.

Quote:
(8) A player who receives a “blindside” block when the blocker is moving toward his own endline and approaches the opponent from behind or from the side.
(b) Prohibited contact against a player who is in a defenseless posture is:
(1) Forcibly hitting the defenseless player’s head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, forearm, or shoulder, regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the defenseless player by encircling or grasping him; and

the only reason why sean lee's helmet comes into contact with tate's helmet is because its was a result of his head going forward after the tate hit him square in the numbers.

As clean a hit as is. You'd think as a defensive player he should know that WRs are waiting to lay a lick.

That hit was on par with the Hines Ward hits on Suggs and Reed.

helmets collide incidentally almost on every play. would you call everything helmet to helmet then?

Appreciate you checking the rule, but I still don't see what qualifies that as a defenseless player. Which of these criteria do you feel he met?

When I first saw the play I would've said all of it, but looking at the .gif posted it looks like Tate comes from the front, but its the placement of his helmet on the hit that makes it questionable. With how fickle the NFL is trying to seem regarding player safety I wouldn't be surprised to see a fine.

there might be a fine because the NFL fines everything nowadays for what seems to be legal hits anyway. so theres no use in betting.

another angle of that sweet sweet hit. :P
