Default Could Andrew Wiggins Start For an NBA team Now?

His highschool coach thinks so.

Andrew Wiggins' coach at Huntington Prep, Rob Fulford, believes Wiggins “could start for an NBA team tomorrow.”

The 6-foot-8, 195-pound Wiggins has been heralded as a once-in-a-generation player since his sophomore year.

“There is no question college is a waste of time for him,” Fulford said.

Wiggins may reclassify from 2014 to 2013, which would allow him to enter the NBA draft a year earlier than expected.

“Selfishly for us, if we’ve got him here for another year that’s better for us, but that’s not what’s best for him,” Fulford said.

No.

His body hasn't matured yet and it will take a few years of being in a NBA weight room and having a personal trainer for him to physically get up
to speed. Not even mentioning the fact this kid isn't mentally prepared for the NBA game.

It would be the same situation as young Kobe coming off the bench. Only difference is Andrew would be 1 year younger than Kobe when he came into the NBA.

His HS coach saying that really concerns me as to whether or not Wiggins will even go to college.

Wiggins would make about $200k at Kentucky.

But he could make about $1 Million playing in Europe before coming to the NBA more mentally & physically prepared than everyone else. If his coach lets him he will average 25 PPG in Europe and be the Euro GOAT by the time he is 19.

College is a waste for kids like this. 1 year of general ed is essentially grade 13 of highschool, no matter what university. Especially as an athlete.

He should go to europe then come back in a year.

True. He should go to Europe right now.

There is no point in him coming back to dominate high school kids in West Virginia when he could go to Europe and make $500k+ right now for the next 2 seasons before coming to the NBA.

Well said. Anyone that thinks that he's anywhere near ready to be a starter in the NBA is delusional and/or heavily biased. I love Wiggins' potential and think he can be a top 5 player in the NBA if he keeps developing but his body isn't close to being able to withstand the bumps and bruises of an NBA schedule.

He would probably get 300K at most in Europe since everyone knows he'd only be there for a year or two max. Even then, the only decent teams that would sign him and give him big minutes are teams in leagues like Serbia and Belgium. You've got to remember that the coaches are under a ton of pressure over there and they could not care less about Wiggins' development. For them, it's all about getting wins and keeping their job. Also, most coaches rarely play teenage players in big roles. I do agree it would really help him become a more well rounded player by the time he came to the NBA as long as a coach doesn't shatter his confidence.

Grinder, you are telling me an NBA wouldn't draft him and start him for developmental purposes. Kid is 17 going on 18. He would be fine.

Also, guy is better than MKG who will be starting next year.

I really think he should go to college. Get some decent coaching.

Coaching isn't that important in 1 college season. Honestly. Ask any other 1-and-done NBA player, I don't think any of their former coaches really helped them transition THAT MUCH to the NBA. Being a 1-and-done talent usually means you were gonna get to that point regardless. Case in point: Kyrie Irving. Played under a great coach but you can't tell me that helped so much in his success for R.O.Y.

I think you can learn a lot from a coach like Calipiri or Coach K. There are numerous coaches in the NCAA who would be happy to spend a lot of time developing a prospect for the NBA. Fred Hoiberg at Iowa St, or Tony Bennett formerly of Wisconsin are just two off the top of my head.

Of course he could be a starter. Have you guys seen some of these starting SGs in the league. Keith Bogans was starting just 2 years ago. Wiggins would easily start for some crappy team.

I don't mean for developmental purposes, what I meant is that there's a guy on every team that would help a team more out at his position this coming than Wiggins would.

You really think he's better than MKG right now? One of MKG's biggest strengths is that he's had an NBA ready body for years and is an amazing defender. His offense is far from stellar but the reason he'll be starting is for his defense and incredible motor. I feel confident in saying MKG would have a far greater impact for any team in the league than Wiggins this coming season.

Keith Bogans was a bit starter that played the first few minutes of every half. He has a niche and he did it decently - come in and defend and knock down a few 3s. Being a starter isn't necessarily about your overall skillset but rather how well you can play the role that's being asked of you.

What it comes down to is that Wiggins is not LeBron James. James could have started for a handful of NBA teams at 16 or 17 due to having an NBA body. Wiggins does not, and would struggle defensively.

Not to say he won't be a great player in 2 years time, but he just doesn't have an NBA body yet
