This year, Cavaliers fans are more concerned with the fact Dion Waiters, the No. 4 overall draft pick, did not start Monday’s preseason opener vs. Montepaschi Siena. He may not start in Tuesday’s preseason game in Canton, either. Instead, the honor went to another newcomer -- free-agent pickup C.J. Miles, a veteran of six NBA seasons (all with Utah). “I just felt C.J. comes in with a little more experience, he’s a guy who’s played in a ton of games. He fits in well with what we’re doing,” Cavs coach Byron Scott said prior to tipoff at Quicken Loans Arena. “It’s the same thing I said about Kyrie last year. Dion has to earn it. Simple as that.” FOXSportsOhio

Good luck CJ. I hope it goes well for ya.

Tinsley will once again play behind scheduled starter, Mo Williams. He will likely be the No. 3 point guard when Earl Watson returns from knee surgery.
Why? Because Earl will whine if he doesn't get his spot back despite Tinsley outplaying him last year and being a better fit?

Newly acquired Marvin Williams scored 13 points against Golden State.

The 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward shot six free throws in 22 minutes, partly because the Jazz posted him against smaller defenders on a handful of possessions.

It’s a strategy Corbin plans to use throughout the season.

"His ability to get down low will give us another weapon close to the basket," Corbin said. "... He got fouled every time he went down there, so it’s a weapon we can use."

From David Locke:

Quote:
The third quarter was the best the Jazz have looked all season. They went on a 30-12 run to start the quarter against Nash, Bryant, World Peace, Gasol and Sacre. The defense was suffocating, the pace was fast and the Jazz took control of the game.

• In the first quarter the Lakers looked great. They were quick, the ball moved and the Jazz couldn’t match what they were bringing. In the 3rd quarter the Jazz did a much better job matching the Lakers approach. The Lakers are going to be great. The ball movement is impressive and it works to the strength of their players.

• The Jazz are playing at a pace we have never seen out of a Jazzteam. Mo Williams is at the center of this tempo change, but it is clear the entire first unit gets that is the goal. When the rebound comes out they are looking to push or off a made basket they are pushing. This is changing the shot distribution on the Jazz. Marvin and Gordon lead the team in scoring for much of the night. Jefferson took 10 shots, Hayward 9 and Marvin 8.

Hard to imagine they are anywhere near the pace they played in the '88 playofffs.

Quote:
• Favors defensive presence was big but offensively he has not made strides. Not sure how Tyrone is going to use him but to some extent his lack of offensive development might mean he has to be in the starting lineup because on the 2nd team the Jazz can’t afford to run the offense through him unless he is playing better offensively. Right now he is a nice defensive compliment to Al Jefferson and is not ready for the offensive possessions, whereas Millsap could become the center of the scoring in the 2nd unit and work from there depending on match-ups the rest of the night.

If the pace is so fast with the first unit than why not Jefferson to the bench with Tinsley, Kanter, Foye and Burks?

Quote:
• Enes Kanter has linked three straight double doubles. He is playing hard and playing confident. He got 10 points and 8 rebounds in the 4th quarter of this game against guys that aren’t good enough to play in the D-League. Give him credit he did what he should do against a lesser player. The next step will be doing this against NBA players, so far he has not put these numbers up against anyone who is going to be in a rotation for an NBA team. Yet, it is undeniable he has made huge progress and is going to be a nice asset this year. Hard work has paid off and he is confident.

• Jamaal Tinsley has played very well as the back up point guard. He runs the team perfectly. Defensively is when he has a tough time but the Lakers were unable to cause him any problems.

• Randy Foye is 1 for 17 in the pre-season. He didn’t look comfortable today playing the point guard.

Not too surprising. Hayward would need to come off the bench if he plays pg for an extended time this year.

Quote:
• Kanter and Jefferson played together for a few moments tonight – in the first half it was just 45 seconds and there was no score. In the third quarter it was on the floor for 80 seconds and the Jazz were -4.

• Foye and Burks played together in the 2nd quarter for 3 minutes and Jazz were +3.

• Burks only played 8 minutes but that is just how the game played out. When Foye got the first run in the 2nd half by the time Burks would have entered the end of the bench was on the floor for LA so the Jazz followed suit.

• Chris Quinn is an NBA player – he will play NBA minutes this season.

I'm all for Quinn instead of Earl.

Locke after OKC:

Quote:
• Solid night for the Jazz. The opponent at this point is irrelevant it is about the Jazz and how they play and how they are executing what Tyrone Corbin wants for his team. We are beginning to see how Corbin envisions this team. It is notably faster offensively, we have never seen a team that plays at this pace in Utah. They push and push and push. On more than one occasion tonight after a made basket the Jazz got a layup on the other end by just running by the defense. Mo Williams is at the core of this. The nice change was in the Golden State game it felt out of control, in this game it was much more controlled and when the initial shot wasn’t there the Jazz got into a quick hitting offensive play. Mo Williams played very well this evening in orchestrating the offense.

Was always frustrating that Sloan wanted to slow it down and settle for the half court game. No Devin!

Quote:
• Defensively the Jazz had much better rotations, only once tonight did the Jazz miss a rotation badly. They were sharp making the correct decision defensively.

• Enes Kanter made another statement tonight. His second straight double double. He is getting up for rebounds and grabbing them with two hands. This sounds very basic but truly this is a special skill. First he jumps as high when he grabs the rebound with 2 hands as he does when he grabs it with one hand. Not many guys are able to go up with two hands and grab couple that with his ability to clear space when he does it and Kanter is going to be a very special rebounder. His jumper looks really smooth as well. His footwork is improved but still needs work and he is getting the ball stripped in traffic. This is all part of development but the first step has been taken and it was a giant step.

• Marvin Williams plays a solid game. He will wow you every now and again but I have a feeling he is going to put 30+ minutes a night on the board and have a very thick box score line. He isn’t AK but he may have some box scores similar where you don’t realize how much he impacted the game and then you look at the score and it is 14-5-3-2-2 and some nights more.

• Al Jefferson is going to lead this team in scoring again but it is not going to be in the same way as last year. The team is playing much faster. The offense is not intended to stick in the left block as it did last year. The Jazz will be able to rely on Al every night for his solid outing but any of 5 guys could lead this team in scoring on a given night.

• Derrick Favors got the start. He has not shown any offensive growth yet in the pre-season. His defense is still terrific and he impacts the game.

• I am getting really curious about how many times Gordan Hayward is going to go to the line per night. It might be a lot

Hope he can take the pounding!

Quote:
• Randy Foye played the point with Alec Burks at the 2 guard. Foye was relatively non descript as a point guard. Didn’t do anything wrong, didn’t do anything too special. He made a nice play to create one basket. The combination with Burks feels like it could really work both offensively and defensively. Burks had a better defensive night than against the Warriors.

• Burks showed a lot of skills this evening. He was just 3 for 7 the line. Burks might force his way on the floor and if he does that may force Foye to the 1

• Still lots of pre-season to be played. Tomorrow will show us mental toughness and who is intimidated by the scene.

Locke on Marvin:

If the first pre-season game gives us any indication of where things are headed the Jazz believe they have another option in the post. Newly acquired Marvin Williams brings unique size to the small forward position at 6’9 237 and a new option in the post.

In the first pre-season game, Corbin called Williams number in the post on two occasions in the first quarter. He missed a turnaround jumper and then drew a foul working to the middle the next time.

However, in the third quarter, Corbin saw Marvin matched on a smaller player and worked the3 match up hard. Klay Thompson of the Warriors, is good sized at 6’7 but against Marvin he was dwarfed. Marvin took Thompson into the left block and drew a foul. The next possession they returned and another foul on Thompson. The Warriors then switched veteran Richard Jefferson onto Marvin and he promptly drew another foul.

Most nights Marvin will have a size advantage in the post. Couple that with Marvin’s surprising ability to run the floor the Jazz feel he could cause opponents some serious match-up difficulties. Many of the teams leading scorers are wing players and for years the Jazz have been unable to make those players extend energy on the defensive end.

The Hawks didn’t use Williams in the post very often over the last three years nor was he particularly successful.

According to synergy sports, the Hawks only had 37 possessions last year that finished with Marvin in the post. Synergy doesn’t account for any possession where he passed out of the post. From the video I watched he is a strong passer out of the post on the rare occasions they went to him there.

When the possession ended with Marvin he was not highly successful. He scored on 40.5% of those possessions, shooting just 11 of 29 and got fouled 8.1% of the time. These were only 6% of the possessions Williams had last year.

The year previous, the Hawks used Williams in the post a bit more. Again his success rate was only on ok. He finished with 72 post ups and shot 22 of 57 from the field and drawing a foul 10% of the time. Marvin’s 2009-10 numbers mirror those of the two previous years.

Will Marvin be more successful in Utah then he was in Atlanta with more opportunities? Will the Jazz discover that despite the size and strength advantages that Marvin has in the post it is not the best way to use him?

This is what the regular season is for.

Another thing I didn't like with Sloan. He didn't try to take advantage of the mismatches.

From the GS game. Haven't been able to get in to the site for a while fot some reason.

Quote:
• Alec Burks really struggled guarding Klay Thompson throughout the game and was taken out of the game for Randy Foye late to have Foye guard Thompson. I thought this was the most revealing moment of the game, that Corbin went to Foye for defense.

Call it Earl Watch. Earl Watson, the Jazz’s veteran point guard, has dutifully given near-daily updates on the status of his surgically repaired right knee, and just as regularly has said he did not have a specific return date and that progress was ongoing.

Before the Jazz played the Lakers at Staples Center, he had something new to say: For the first time since April, he participated in basketball drills during Saturday’s shootaround.

"That’s a progression," the 12th-year point guard said. "That’s a big step forward. Pretty much everything started today, but we’re building it slow."

Watson traveled to Los Angeles with the Jazz for their five-day, three-game road trip and dressed Saturday night but did not play. Earlier this camp, Watson targeted opening night on Halloween against Dallas for a return.

Can't wait to see how long before he's whining because he's not playing!

Quote:
Watson underwent surgery in April to fix a torn medial meniscus. Saturday was the most positive sign that the guard is on his way to moving past the injury. The next step, Watson said, is getting the rest of his body conditioned to playing full speed again.

"It felt good," Watson said, "but I’ve got to get in better shape — better wind, so to speak. It’s nothing like basketball shape — you don’t know it until you play it."

While Watson had been able to shoot and jog for months, Saturday marked the first day, he said, of being able to cut and sprint, putting full exertion on the knee.

"The main thing," he said, "is to get my quad stronger, get my hamstring stronger, continuing to lay the foundation for the season, for the rest of my life, so to speak."

INSIDER – Collection of Corbin Quotes from Week 1

by David Locke

CORBIN ON FOYE
“He is a shooter, he is a great spot up shooter, we can the ball in his hands some to make plays, but if he has his feet spot spotting up in the corner or behind the three point line we feel very good him making shots.”

CORBIN ON MO WILLIAMS
“He is a leader he is an attacker, he is a great communicator with the guys on the floor in a good way, they seem to listen and follow what he is saying. His speed, the way he can generates and navigate guys on the floor, he sees things early, he advances the ball, and then makes a play off that and gives us more versatility then we have had.

CORBIN ON HOW MO WILLIAMS IS EVOLVED
His confidence his shooting is better, he is a pretty dead eye three point shooter, he is a better one on one attacker then he was then, he has a good feel when to go and when to pull back, when to get other guys involved and who to go to at the time.

CORBIN ON KANTER
He is 20 years old and he missed a whole year at Kentucky, he had a lockout year so he missed the summer and that summer went to December – he came in and guys are bigger faster stronger and he is trying to think his way through it. Now he knows what to expect, he had a time frame to be ready.

Kanter is a young guy trying to figure out his body and over the next few years he may go through stretches where he is a little heavier where is a little smaller.
He needs to learn if it is not a time to where he needs to create contact just catch and finish and not seek out contact when it is not necessary.

CORBIN ON MARVIN WILLIAMS
the shot looks good, he is confident shooter, he knows how to get his feet under him and get his base down so when he comes off the driblle or comes off the down screen he is facing, he has turned quick and get his balance and his release looks really good. He is a good spot up shooter and I think we can get him better off the dribble some too.

He can handle the ball, you can put the ball in his hand, you can put him in pick and roll occasionally, you can put the ball in his hand early and be able to create and get to the basket some, he should be able to get to the free throw line some by posting guys up especially smaller 3

CORBIN ON MILLSAP AS A THREE
“There may be times when we can use him as three man he is a 4 man and he likes playing 4 at times we have an advantage to go big and put him at the three spot we will use that times to play him at three but we don’t want to put him at a disadvantage at the three spot and get him in foul trouble.”

CORBIN ON DIFFERENT STYLE TEAM
What fans will notice different about the team – our size – we can be big with Gordon playing the 2, the way we can move with this size is going to be a nice change.

Point guard Mo Williams will sit out the Jazz’s exhibition game Tuesday against the Lakers to rest a strained right adductor muscle.

Williams is listed as probable for Wednesday’s game against his former team, the Clippers, at Staples Center. Jamaal Tinsley will replace Williams in the starting lineup, coach Tyrone Corbin said following Tuesday’s shootaround.

Williams, a 10-year veteran, said he has battled the injury since undergoing hernia surgery in 2008, and that it tends to flare up during training camp each year.

"We want to be careful with it," Williams said, "make sure it don’t become a problem going into the season. I should be ready by tomorrow."

Corbin said he didn’t want Williams to put "himself in jeopardy of missing more games down the road" and that it’s "better to be a little bit more cautious now than take a chance with him."

Tinsley will start with the first unit, creating more opportunities for training camp invitee Chris Quinn and free agent acquisition Randy Foye at point guard. Second-year combo guard Alec Burks has spent some time at the position this preseason, but Corbin said Burks knows the system and that it is more important to get Foye comfortable there.

Through the first three games of the preseason, including Utah’s 99-86 win over the Lakers on Saturday, Corbin stuck with strict rotations. He played his reserves almost exclusively in the second and fourth quarters, while playing the starters in the first and third. He said as the team approaches the halfway point of the preseason he will begin to pare down his rotation, although that is compromised by Williams’ absence Tuesday.

"We want to get a look at a few different rotations in different situations," Corbin said. "Looking at it against different kind of competition on different nights, but we’ll start tightening things up going forward but we’re just getting close to it."
