Here's what he had to say about Siouxsie when she bought a new washing machine:

"A few years after [the Sex Pistols era] when I was with PiL, she moved across the street from Jeanette Lee, who worked with us at that time. Siouxsie came over, bragging about her new washing machine and spin dryer. She said we were all welcome to come over and wash our clothes. A washing machine party. You can imagine what I let rip. I couldn’t sit there and take that from her. Housewife superstar. I took the piss at her for about twenty minutes, and she has never spoken to me since—all because of a washing machine (Lydon, 272)."

So basically, bragging about a new washing machine isn't punk, but doing a butter commercial is.

I like so called punk rock but Johnny Rotten is and always was a child. For him to think that he is less of a sell out than most other musicians is a laugh, especially now.

Johnny Rotten has always been a fake figurehead.

His image and entire band were thoroughly engineered from the start by a British fashion designer who swagger jacked the style of the original New York punks.

I like the Sex Pistols and everything, but yeah, they were every bit as manufactured as One Direction or any other boy/girl band you can think of. The idea that they were somehow ever "legit" is a laugh.

Still, Nevermind the Bollocks was a fantastic album.

Yes. But as manufactured as they were, there was legit hate on that album. The music was not at all accessible.

PIL is even harder to listen to.

Does One Direction write their own songs? It's unfathomably stupid to think that Johnny Rotten didn't contribute to the success of the Sex Pistols.

Here's the title track from music genius's Malcolm McClaren's debut album.

I saw just Pete Townshend talk about his book tonight. Do you think artists like Townshend reacted to the Sex Pistols because they were manufactured?

Malcolm McClaren definitely discovered John Lydon, but in no ****ing way did he create John Lydon.

And McClaren had virtually nothing to do with the music. Their music worked because of the smart, sneering, nihilism of Rotten's lyrics were paired with sub-Beatles melodies of bassist Glen Matlock.

Punk's not dead. And honestly, Sex Pistols weren't even the best punk bands of their time. I'd take The Clash and The Ramones over them any day any time.

I agree with you for the most part, but given how vocal Lydon's been in recent years about smacking down people who appropriate punk (such as Kelly Osbourne a few years back), it's extraordinarily hypocritical for him to do a fvcking butter ad of all things.

But yes, I agree that Lydon owned his look, and that him and Matlock were what made the Pistols great. As a musical unit, however, I don't respect them nearly as much as The Ramones, X, or any number of other acts.
