Melo was amazing but the Knicks as a team played significantly worse than against the Spurs.
Defense just wasn't there and if Melo didn't go HAM in the 4th we could have easily lost the game.
Celtics are next. Teams don't really like each other so I hope that's enough for the Knicks to try not to open the game in such embarrassing fashion once again.
Nets are starting to win some games so every win is important to maintain that 4-5 game lead over them in the Atlantic.

Its simple Clutch. First the Knicks won because Orlando stopped doing PNR with Jameer Nelson. He went to the bench and then when he came back in they went in another direction.
2nd once the Knicks went small instead of having Jones, Harkless, and Nicholson on Melo they put McRoberts. When you dont double the only other player capable of scoring or creating there own shot is JR.
When teams double thats when the Knicks "So Called Knick Shooters" can get off. Provided they arent scared to shoot.
Defensively the PG's cant stop the ball especially in the PNR. Novak has been better but if he doesnt shoot then he shouldnt be in the line up. The defense collapses starts their because they switch and the rotation gets off.
Which is why JR Smith should be starting. Kidd and Brewer don't have the speed to play against quick guards.
J.R. should be starting. Our lack of energy is killing us early in the games, that's the main reason why we get down by 10+ every 1st half.
You can say a lot of things about J.R. but you can never question his effort. He always plays hard. Not always smart but he gives you effort, something other starters clearly don't unless it's a nationally televised game.
Start Kidd,J.R,Melo,Camby,Tyson until Shumpert and Felton come back.
In the playoffs (assuming everyone's healthy) we should probably start Felton/Shumpert/Melo/Amare/Tyson but finish the games with Kidd/J.R./Melo/Amare/Tyson.
Can't start JR because the Knicks will get blown out once they go to the bench. No matter what you think if Melo and JR are on the floor at the same time then they can never rest. Right now it's fine because they can have the ball in their hands to create for themselves or others. No one will ever start them together just basketball logic. As a fan it makes sense.
This team doesn't have much firepower. That's why the Knicks need Stat to be good soon. Even if Shump comes back the Knicks lack offensive weapons in the starting unit and on the bench.
So it's better to let the first unit get blown out? That's what's been happening pretty much every game lately.
JR and Melo play essentially the rest of the game together. Why can't they start together?
It depends on the situation. But the problem isnt JR starting as opposed to the starters doing a better job. The Knicks dont have the firepower that most teams have. Its a 2 man show. This is why the Knicks are in trouble as the season progresses from the lack of rest they can give Melo.
They do play together but one of them are always on the floor. If they both are starting then when its time to rest that next unit will be utterly destroyed offensively and defensively. I may not be explaining clear enough though. I know as fans you want the best unit out there on the floor to begin the game but once they are off the floor they would not be able to catch up or maintain leads. You need both of them to lead each unit.
Start both of them then rest J.R. in the last 4 minutes of the 1st quarter and leave Melo in. Melo will go out at the end of the 1st so bring J.R. for the start of the 2nd.
Problem solved.

The problem is that the starting lineup absolutely blows other than Melo. It's 4 guys who have zero threat to score the basketball. If Melo doesn't go off in the first, then we start losing. For the past 10 games or so, we've lost almost every single first quarter. It's no secret why.
Woodson is protecting the bench at the expense of the starting lineup. I think that's completely backwards, and it is costing us games.

Actually we won the 1st quarter against San Antonio. We're 1-8 in our last 9 games though
But I agree with you. J.R. should start and the Knicks as a team play horrible in the 1st quarters as of late. But our problem isn't only the offense. We averaged slightly over 23 points during that 1-8 stretch in the first quarters. That's not great but not terrible either. On the other hand allowing 36 points to Orlando,32 to Sacramento,30 to Chicago and Portland and 29 to Phoenix and Minnesota is.
We start the games with no sense of urgency and absolutely no effort. That's why teams score so easy on us. The only game when we gave full effort in the 1st quarter was against San Antonio and guess what,we won the 1st quarter and limited them to only 19 points.
Knicks when giving effort - limiting one of the best offenses in the league to 19 points
Knicks when not giving effort - letting some of the worst offenses in the league score 30+ on them.
So yeah,I claim it's an effort thing. There are some things on defense that I despise (unnecessary doubling in the post which leads to opponents shooters being wide open) but the reason for the 1st quarter mess is poor effort.
J.R. brings a lot more energy than Brewer so he could change things. Also he isn't a liability on offense. Start him,let him play for 7-8 minutes than sit him down until the 2nd quarter. Then take Melo out and bring J.R. back in.
Luckily it would never happen. Because once they sit this team would get demolished. Staggering those minutes would be challenging. I mean lawd you really want Prigi, Brewer, Novak, Stat, Camby or throw Kidd, Copeland for how many minutes? LMAO
If Stat was the guy from the Sunz time like 26 years old then yeah but he isnt.... OMG that lineup would get massacred in the worse way on both ends of the floor.
I don't like how we are forcing it to Amare. Let him get back in the groove naturally. He's just like a bull in a china shop right now. All the stuff we blamed Melo for last season is what we're encouraging him to do. Giving him the ball and standing around when he makes his move...not ready to shoot.
I DO like the lineup w/ Camby and Chandler however. Gives us size and shot blocking for once. Also, Camby is gradually starting to get back into shape. He moves his feet pretty well even at this age.

I think Camby is fine in there, but Camby actually can shoot and needs to do so, and pass, he played point guard in highschool.
But our backcourt just cannot be single digit scoring, they aren't a threat at all.
