Default Computer Help?

I'm not real tech savy and the laptop I am forced to use at the moment requires you to open task manager and shut down virtually every unneccessary process for it to work.

I can't even have two windows open at the same time.

Using task manager to run a new task how can I find the Explorer program that has the toolbar on the bottom?

I have to shut it down to get the computer to function but it can be reopened afterwards so I have volume control for YouTube so I can listen to some tracks while I post.

I know this should be simple but I don't even have a smartphone. I was way ahead of the curve technology wise in my late teens early twenties but I've feel off.

Just wondering if anyone knows the file name(Explorer/Toolbar) I should look for or if you can help me find it another way.

Will rep when I can. Thank you in advance.

Hit Ctrl + Shift + Esc to bring up the Task Manager.

Then in the Task Manager, click File, New Task (Run...).

Then type:

explorer.exe

Then click "OK."

Through your Start button opening up "Run..."

Type in... msconfig

A new window should open up, go to the "Startup" tab

Unchecked all the unnecessary programs that start up when your computer starts.

Restart

This might help with the instability issue.

Thanks for the info. It's annoying as ****. It's like you have to have a combination to get this damn thing to work. Repped.

Btw I don't think you need to type out the full explorer.exe, just explorer should automatically work.

I used to have a slow ass computer too...couldn't run a browser and word at the same time.

Don't worry about the rep, I misread what you asked. But get what guy says - it's pretty common knowledge however a must for a PC user.

get Linux (Ubuntu). Install Open Office and Firefox. Go from there. Speed won't be a problem, also you won't have unnessecary processes run.

Been wanting FireFox for a while by my Internet Explorer "has encounter a problem" or whatever just about every time I've tried to download it.

Getting it soon though. Thanks.

Some good advise given in this thread.

You might also want to go into services.msc (via start/run) and disable un-needed windows services.

Do some research first though, as if you turn off the wrong one you could end up w/ a non-bootable computer. If unsure, just google the name of the service.

Regarding the above-mentioned "services", "Windows Search" is a big one. It is constantly indexing the contents of your Hard Drive, eating up resources. By disabling that, searching for a file is slower, but speed of the computer during general operation should improve.

Also, when is the last time you ran Ccleaner?

And lastly, whatever browser you're using, remove all those useless toolbars like bing, ask, google, etc...they are un-needed and only slow your pc down.

My computer seems to run just as fast as it did 2.5 years ago...

I run CCleaner once a week (system/registry clean)
And I defrag once a week as well.
