Default Melo's playoff record

I'm sure this has been discussed before, so apologies in advance but out of idle curiosity I looked up Carmelo's playoff record and surprised myself at how underwhelming it was. Only once has he advanced out of the first round (2009) and on only one other occasion has he won more than one playoff game in a single season (2010). Otherwise his playoff resume is a collection of sweeps and 4-1 series losses, which constitutes a modest 17 wins in aggregate.

Now, I'm not trying to bash Melo - I have no strongly held opinion on him one way or the other - but how do you go about defending that record? Sure, the stock response is he didn't have enough help, its a team game and so on and so forth but in all honesty has he underachieved? What case can you make that accounts for his postseason disappointment?

Your thoughts please.

Melo has had more help than Lebron has had in Cleveland. Lebron never had any problem going past the 1st round.

Lebron had to come up against prime Kobe and Duncan led teams too I presume

Lebron no doubt would have had a better record in the later stages of his time at Cleveland. But would have faired no better than Melo up until say 08 or so had he played in a much better conference.

The relative strength of the Western Conference (compared to the East) in the 00s is definitely a valid point in defence of Melo in my opinion.

- His first playoff elimination was at the hands of the T-Wolves in KG's MVP season
- Second was v the 05 champion Spurs
- Fourth v the 07 champion Spurs
- Fifth & sixth v the Lakers in seasons Kobe won the regular season and Finals MVP.

What was Denver's playoff record in the 8 years before Melo? How many wins did they have in the year before they drafted him?

If Melo's Nuggets were magically in the ECF he'd have STILL never missed the playoffs (a great feat in the West) and probably never not gotten out of the first round.

Instead of getting to beat up on the Wizards and Sixers or Hawks he was playing the best teams in the league and often eventual champions.

And as much help as people claim Melo had, it was never a properly built team. At least until they got outside shooting from Chauncey.

the fact that Melo is currently having the same success in the East as he did in the West kind of made your point stupid.

i wish people stop it with this "West rules East sucks" bullshit. this isn't 2002

The Bulls with a heathly Rose would have own any team in the west and anybody who disagree is stupid.

Melo, Amare, Deron Williams, and mike d'antoni all had major success playing in the West.

We'll see this year. If you can't see the problems that the Knicks had, then you're stupid. And it has nothing to do with Amare and Melo not being able to play together. The Melo trade, no true free agency after the trade, and injuries during playoffs made this team totally incomplete.

year one...melo vs celtics big 4....wonder how that would have pklayed out any different

year 2...lost to the champions where it was again melo vs big 3

both years in ny, melo lost his cast to injuries in the playoffs

thats my point.

Melo's teams dont do well in the season which make him and his squad play a tougher team in the playoffs.

2011: traded most of the team away to get him; as a result Toney Douglas and Jared Jeffries were 2nd and 3rd option against Boston

2012: lockout season; no training camp; started the year 18-24 with a fake coach; fired the fake coach; finished 18-6 to just barely get into the playoffs and had to face the eventual champs

He and Amar'e haven't even played 82 games together yet.

But yea, I see your point. It's all Melo's fault.
