Default OT: Brandy might face Vehicular Manslaughter charge

January 25, 2007 - Police in Los Angeles say that R&B singer Brandy could face vehicular manslaughter charges for setting off a multi-car accident that killed a woman last month.

California police report that the 27-year-old singer was driving her S-U-V onHighway 405 in Los Angeles on December 30th, 2005, when she rear-ended a car driven by Aboudihaj Awatef, a 38-year-old mother of two.

Brandy failed to slow down and struck the back of Awatef 2005 Honda at about 65 mph, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

Awatef's car then struck the rear of another car, and then sailed sideways, bouncing off the divider wall and back onto the highway before being struck by another car driven by 50-year-old Mallory Ham.

Awatef was taken to a hospital, where she died of blunt-force injuries, said county coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey. The coroner's office ruled her death an accident.

Malloray Ham also was taken to a hospital where she was treated for moderate injuries. .

Police say there is no evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved. Brandy was not injured in the crash.

Publicist Courtney Barnes says "Brandy wishes to publicly express her condolences to the family of the deceased."

Norwood, whose hits include "Sittin' Up in My Room" and "The Boy Is Mine," has made five albums and earned a Grammy in 1999. She began her recording career at 14 and acted in film and TV shows, starring on the sitcom "Moesha" from 1996 to 2001 and most recently as a judge for NBC's "America's Got Talent."

the question here is:

Do you think because she is a celebrity she will get off of this charge? or will she be held accountable?

Out of court settlement with the family of the deceased and community service. She won't get jail time.

I agree, but if it was you or me, we'd be doing 3-5.

More like rich people in general get special treatment, it's called capitalism.

This may very well be one of those cases where she'll be made an example... I've always liked Brandy... this is sad.

these would be criminal charges and would have nothing to do with a civil law suit filed by the family.. manslaughter is a murder charge, but since no alcohol or drugs were in volved she can probaly plea the charges to a plea "no contest" which would be like a plea of guilty but without admitting the guilt.. she would probably get a suspended sentance and probation... the no contest plea also can not be used in a civil suit as a a plea of guilty as charged would be...

this should be an automatic involuntary manslaughter charge. this could be charged to the best drivers out there. the fact that traffic was at a complete stop does not yeild any explaination whether your are under the influence or not, or vehicle malfunction. we would all definitely be sitting in jail pending investigation. since she is a celeb, she has nowhere to run, that is why she is free. a civil law suit settlement/judgement is almost guaranteed for this.

Maybe this is why Q-Rich dumped her. The girl can't drive. Come to think of it, neither can he.

its freaken negligence...how can she go to jail?

if she was doing things with reckless disregard then yeah maybe she would get jail time for invol. man.

besides...what about those executives that sold ford pintos that killed people in accidents? are they going to jail? no.
