Default Myth or Truth - Jerry West came into the league with a max-reach 16" above the rim:

It says so in his NBA.com bio - but let's face it the guy almost never dunked and his game was played almost entirely below the rim. So is such a reach for Jerry nothing but a myth?

Well I just got done watching the 1972 LA Lakers documentary and 33 year old Jerry West doesn't reach 16" above the rim (16" up would be about 2" less than the top of the small square - and the square border is 2" so 16" would be the underside corner of the square), but it does look like at that age he reaches about 14" above the rim. I think an 22 year old rookie Jerry West getting 2" higher doesn't seem out of the question




so I declare this myth to be:
