Re: Who else misses going to video stores to rent movies?
I do and I don't. I used to live near one and loved the selection that I could make based on what I felt like that day. They they would have monthly passes and I could go back and forth renting when I felt like it. But the plus side now is that it is significantly cheaper, and I can watch something on Netflix instantly (although not as good or as updated of a selection).
Re: Who else misses going to video stores to rent movies?
Toronto still has great video stores, so maybe you guys just have to look and see what you find in your city. Sure Blockbuster and Hollywood Video might have died off, but maybe there are still some cool places out there(and to take a girl like Rake suggested). I do have to agree, while the convenience of picking movies on Netflix is unmatched, the actual experience of going with people and doing it yourself is so much better than scrolling.

With smartphones isn't that complaint kinda invalid?

I actually kind of enjoyed working at a video store. A job where I get to talk about movies for hours? Pretty awesome to get paid for that, even if it was just for chump change.

Went to blockbuster a lot this past summer because of a free subscription trial...often go to redbox too. But yeah online takes away the personalization of it all.
Re: Who else misses going to video stores to rent movies?
Yeah those were good times.
I'm now able to see better movies now though, since you can just look up the imdb and rotten tomatoes ratings.
I don't always agree with the critics or imdb users, but a movie with a 3.2 imdb rating and a 7% fresh rating on rottentomatoes really is terrible 99% of the time. So it's good to not have to waste a trip to the store and 2 hours of watching the movie on that.
Re: Who else misses going to video stores to rent movies?
I miss being able to rent lesser known movies. Also when the person behind the counter could tell you what movie you are thinking of(based on a description that would get you a rabbit hole from google), and where to find it in the store. There are movies that I own on VHS that aren't anywhere to be found online today(streaming or for sale), and some of them are really awesome.
Now, among the few video rental stores that are open, the kid behind the counter doesn't know shit and thinks movies like the Avengers is the GOAT film of all time.

Only b/c there were a lot of cute girls/milfs in Blockbuster. Really easy to start a convo, plus it was usually in the evening, plus you could tell if they were single, couples usually go to pick a movie out together.
