donating money to charity =/= caring about poor people. there are other reasons to donate money, such as tax reduction purposes... we all know how much mitt romney loves paying taxes

laughter, oh, el.

If there were no tax write-offs, the only money he'd be giving away is tithes to his cult and more car-elevators for his mansions.

I like her because she's definitely native american, and I always vote for one of my own people. She's been very honest about that as well. After all, just look at her cheek bones. Clearly a native trait.

The vast, vast majority of Romney's charitable donations have gone to the Mormon Church... not exactly a safe haven for the poorest among us.

From 1990 to 2009, Romney gave to charity an average of 13.5% of his gross adjusted income. The Mormon Church demands at least 10% of your income in order to remain in good standing.

This leaves 3.5% that also may or may not have ended up at the Mormon Church as well...

Quote:
Earlier this week I wrote about Mitt Romney's charitable donations in 2010, as described on his tax return.

I noted that Romney gave away $3 million of the $22 million he made that year in the form of two donations:

One to the Mormon church, for ~$1.5 million
One to "The Tyler Foundation" for ~$1.5 million

This is correct.

But I then went on to describe The Tyler Foundation as a Boston-based charity that helps kids with epilepsy, an assumption I made after a Google search (en exact match in Boston? Of course it's the right "Tyler Foundation"!)

Well, a sharp-eyed reader did some digging on this and discovered that I was a bonehead. Specifically, the reader found that I had the wrong Tyler Foundation. The right Tyler Foundation, it appears, is a private legal entity controlled and funded by the Romneys that gives smaller gifts to other charities.

This was a stupid mistake on my part, and I apologize for it.

So, what is this "Tyler Foundation" that gets so much of Mitt Romney's money?

It's a private Boston-based legal entity that had more than $10 million in assets at the end of 2010.

Romney gave the foundation $1,458,807 million of stock distributed from one of his investment vehicles in 2010, and the foundation generated another $1.5 million that year from interest and asset sales.

The foundation also gave away a total of $647,500 of gifts in 2010.

By far the largest one was to the Mormon church -- $145,000.

Combined with the $1.5 million Romney gave the church in another direct cash gift, this means that Romney gave the Mormon church nearly $1.7 million in 2010--about 60% his charitable donations in 2010.

Who else did Romney give money to?

A motley assortment of organizations, including the George W. Bush Library, the U.S. Equestrian Team, Harvard Business School, Brigham Young, and several medical and children's foundations.

Specifically:

The Belmont Hill School ($5,000)
Best Friends Foundation ($15,000)
Boys and Girls Club Of Boston ($10,000)
Brigham Young University ($25,000)
Center For Treatment of Pediatric MS ($75,000)
City Year ($5,000)
Dana Farber Cancer Institute ($10,000)
Dana Farber Pan Mass Challenge ($20,000)
Deseret International ($25,000)
Friends Of The Belmont Council ($20,000)
George W. Bush Library ($100,000)
Harvard Business School ($10,000)
Camp High Hopes ($5,000)
Homes For Our Troops ($20,000)
Inner-City Scholarship Fund ($10,000)
Joey Fund For Cystic Fybrosis ($20,000)
MMOFRA Trom Foundation ($30,000)
MS Cure ($10,000)
Operation Kids ($65,000)
Right To Play ($10,000)
US Equestrian Team Foundation ($10,000)
Wright Museum ($25,000)

So, there you have it. Mitt Romney's charitable donations for 2010.

Look, Romney is free to give money to whomever he deems worthy. I actually applaud his charity work, regardless of where that money goes.

But, let's also not pretend as though he is a champion of causes to help the indigent. The vast, vast majority of his charity goes to financially well off organizations.
