Default Rumors That The Spanish League Wants To Invite NBA Teams To Play The King's Cup

I have been hearing rumors lately that the Spanish League is thinking about inviting NBA teams to participate at the King's Cup tournament.

At first they would invite just one NBA team, but then later they might invite as many as 4 NBA teams to participate in it.

Understand this is just rumors I am hearing, but what does everything think about this possibility? Understand this would NOT be like the McDonald's Championship, or the Euroleague American Tour, or the NBA Europe Live Tour.

This would be an actual official tournament, that would take place during the regular season.

Sure we'll send Iverson, TMac, Gilbert Arenas, Marbury, Martin and win. They can be team "Domination"

To be honest, I don't think this is a horrible idea. There's no way that any European tournament could pay enough to lure an NBA team there -- especially given the financial situation with the euro -- but why not put together a team of some former stars to compete?

Well, that team wouldn't work in many ways IMO.
* The roster players would have to play together for some time (and some of those players already play for a team).
* That roster isn't as marketable as an actual NBA team (IMO, obviously).
* Why would the NBA send an "NBA team" composed of non NBA players?

I won't get into the "who would win" stuff, as there's no way people would take it seriously.

I haven't heard anything about this BTW.

I agree with most of your points, but certain former big-name players -- such as Starbury and AI, who are known internationally would certainly be marketable, to a certain degree.

Even though AI's foray into Turkey didn't end well, he generated lots of fan interest.

As you said, who knows how credible this "news" is, but it speaks to something I've been advocating for a long time. The U.S. should put a team together of D-League level stars to play internationally in events like the Olympics.

The superstar system in place has been moderately successful, but the weak point has always been that the players don't get enough practice time with each other. Why not create a real "team" that is together on a regular basis?

Tournaments like this one, if real, would be a great way to play the international circuit and prepare the team for more high-profile contests.

I don't think they'd be good enough.
I believe a team of US players playing FIBA competitions would be the best choice:
* They're used to FIBA rules.
* Playing in FIBA competitions, their schedule enables them to play/train as often other international competition teams, and with the same rest.
* They wouldn't need the usual insurements NBA players need to play for their National teams.
* They'd be much better than an D-League team.

I really don't think we're disagreeing. To be clear, I didn't say a D-League team, I want players who are just below the regular NBA level, and who are not currently on a roster.

If you recruit NBA players, then time and accessibility will always be a problem. A team of lesser talents, when given enough playing time together, would certainly be competitive.

In essence, that's what international teams are comprised of. For the most part, they have a few marginal NBA-level talents, and the rest are not as good.

Put a team together and play in FIBA competitions, as you suggested so that they become accostumed to the rules and regulations.

If the players are picked carefully, you might have a dedicated group who are commited to playing the FIBA schedule, as opposed to waiting for the NBA season to begin.

With all due respect to the D-League, 90% of the teams would get smashed by Barca Regal, Madrid, or Caja.

It wouldn't be treated as anything more than an exhibition by the NBA teams because they couldn't give a **** about it, so it's totally not interesting at all.
