Niko is just the short form of Nikola, which is basically & obviously Nicolas in another language, so it's no fictional name. If your brother in law's wife went by that criteria, they couldn't take any name, because there are basically no names that haven't been taken in films, games and novels already.

definitely not naming a kid after a video game. a name in a work of classic lit or something like that? Sure.

New a family that named their kid Arthas, another named their kid Akari, no other weird ones of the top of my dome...

I always thought it'd be cool to use the middle name Raynor.
