So this story looks to get very interesting from here on to the next pre-season for various reasons:

1) Alex Smith is, rightly, pissed. He's really nice, and a team guy, but how long can he hold out before he explodes? Especially if say Kap cools off?

2) What happens IF Kap cools off? You have a QB who has been a top QB this season sitting. You can't ignore that if Colin starts playing like a rookie.

3) If they get to the playoffs but lose the first game, all of the sudden the floodgates of "I told you so" open up. This was a Superbowl contender last year with Alex, and the team has supposedly gotten better since then. That'd be an utter failure in most eyes.

4) If bridges have been burned, what happens in the off season?

Essentially by going with Kaepernick the 49ers are trying to win the Superbowl with a rookie QB. I feel like it would be better to have put Smith back in as QB and make the change next year. Smith looked better than last year.

When Kaepernick has his rookie moments (might be weeks, not even one game) it may cost the Niners their season.

Just for the record, after reading this thread it seems like everyone, as I thought before this week, thinks Kaepernick is a rookie. He was taken in the second round of the 2011 draft so this was his second year.

Didn't know until the Saints game when the commentators mentioned it.

Still, the guy has 2 starts under his belt so playing like a rookie is very possible.

We all know he's a second year.

But with only two starts and barely any other significant game time previously he is in effect a rookie.

I feel really sorry for Alex Smith, he is having the best season of his career and did nothing to deserve getting benched other than being the second most talented quarterback on the niners.

That said, going with kaepernick from here is win-win. Kaep has a better arm, better legs, better eyes, better height, and he is a flat out better playmaker. Kaep probably should have been the starter at the beginning of the season, and he will certainly be the starter next season. The only thing that Alex Smith has over Kaep is experience, and the only way to change that is to give Kaep the minutes. Might as well give them to him right now.

It is likely that Kaep will have some growing pains, and I would not be suprised at all if he chokes away a playoff game. I wouldnt be suprised if he chokes away a playoff game next year too, young players do things like that. If Kaep ends up benched or injured, I also wouldnt be suprised if Alex Smith chokes away a playoff game. In fact I think given a random playoff game, Alex Smith would be more likely to choke than Kaep would, right now.

It sounds like Harbaugh will just replace Kaepernick with Smith if he doesn't perform. You can't just jerk them in and out, that won't work. It might work once, it's not going to work back and forth.

barring injury, alex smith will never start another game as a niner. i think kaep would have to regress to sanchez/tebow levels to get yanked now.

It's a shame because Smith has been playing great football this year. He has everything to back it up too, stats and wins. Also, don't forgot he was playing with a injured throwing finger during a stretch in the season which hurt his play for a while.

Kaepernick is a good QB with a good skillet but he doesn't deserve to start.. There's no justification in starting Kaepernick. Let's compare to this with the HC situation. Let's say if Harbough get's sick for two weeks and the replacement HC wins two straight games, does he deserve to become the full time HC? I know it's two different situations but the comparison can be made.

Here's the thing. Here's what sticks in my head most about this situation and something I haven't heard one single person on the local radio or any media guys talk about.

All rookie QB's hit a wall. All of them. There is always growing pain.

The problem is that it seems likely time wise that that could come at the worst possible time for this team.

This is a SB team. It would be a massive shame if they lost an opportunity because the QB they had going was struggling to find his footing after the league inevitably hits him in the mouth.

A couple things that make me feel better about it all: 1). This is just conjuncture. He will absolutely slow down but who knows when or how much? 2). Alex has come in in the past and saved games. He's quite clutch, so if they need to pull Kap in a playoff game I'm confident in Alex coming in.

But this is a massive gamble. You have a guy that statistically has been awesome this season, and you're replacing him with a guy that hasn't been that much more awesome (another thing that bugs me. The whole thing is oh he can do the vertical game, but he's only averaging about 1 YPA more than Smith and it's not going to remain that high. Smith is 4th in YPA. I understand the big play thing but my point is that it's not really a part of the offense) and who is not yet as reliable.

I just really hope it doesn't bite us. No one doubts that his upside far exceeds Alex's ability, but what I personally doubt is when he'll fall before he gets up.

At the moment though we have the best back-up situation in the game. And that is really nice.

Depends. Do they look like an infinitely better team with the new coach as opposed to Harbough? If so, then yes he does deserve to lose his job.

How do they look infinitely better with Kaep? I wasn't overly impressed with his last game. He was rolling out and throwing to completely wide open receivers, and he threw what could have been a rather costly interception if Brooks didn't bail his ass out.

Kaep did play well but they didn't look better. You are also right about getting bailed out by the defense who shut down Brees and scored two defensive TD's.

Thing is Smith doesn't have the "swag"(what I look to call it) as Kaepernick. Smith has been basically marketed and labeled as a game manager by most people while Kaepernick is viewed as the athletic QB who's dynamic. It's absurd that people are still calling Smith a game manager, just look at his stats. He's playing like a top 5 QB if anything.

Usually NFL defenses find ways to neutralize backup QB's after more tape on them are available, especially the athletic QB's. But fortunately for us we have Harbough who'll put Kaepernick in a position to win.

Harbaugh might undervalue QB's He was a fairly marginal QB. What i hear is all second hand (like all of us) but it almost sounds like the QB's are interchangable, no more a problem than changing starting RB's, and it doesn't work like that. I've never seen a situation watching football where QB's get flipped more than once and it works.
