so let me get your thinking process straight
1) Assad is by all accounts winning the war on all important fronts (Aleppo, Deir Ezzor, Homs, etc.) with a help of conventional weapons and international allies acting in a manner that isn't overstepping the international law too much
2) Assad's reputation is the best it has been in years. While there is still a war crime here or there, most people want him to end ISIS and the armed rebels and sit down for peace talks with opposition
3) The Trump administration announces that removing Assad is no longer a priority and his fate will be decided by Syrians. Trump has also spent his entire campaign criticizing interventionism and neocon FP so by all accounts he looked like somebody Assad could talk to.
4) Yesterday, on 5th April a major peace conference was to happen in Brussels
And you say that in this situation Assad goes and gasses a bunch of kids in some strategically and tactically unimportant shithole just for... shit and giggles? Even though the purported use of sarin/chlorine/whatever has always been the thing that elicits the loudest international outcry and calls for intervention?
Do you really believe this?
I mean dictators may be "evil" but they are hardly ever irrational actors. And this is the most irrational action Assad could've taken in this situation.
Do you really believe all this? After everything the US foreign policy establishment has done over the last few decades and after they've spent the last several years begging anyone who would listen to them to invade Syria and after they've spent years arming the so called 'moderates'?
