Making sorted by name made it a lot easier compared to sorted by point.

Anyone know if Kidd did it in both his 1st and 2nd stint with Dallas? I could see him putting up one or 2 possibly this season with us.

Basically every number cited comes from a newspaper article. The numbers are all as correct as the sources cited (I haven't worked on Wilt's since that was already completed, but for Russell's for instance the numbers used match the articles). If some of the 'estimates' (which you have to call these, since they weren't officially recorded) don't match totals from known tape we have, it's due to a discrepancy on the part of the reporter who wrote the cited newspaper article.

I haven't personally, no, though if someone downloads the spreadsheet they could compute the averages (creating an extra column and copying over the data for relevant numbers in the process, since not everything in that column is numeric).

Of people here on ISH though, I know G.O.A.T has done some work with estimates...you'd have to ask him about Wilt, but I know he did a good job with Russell's numbers.

But yeah they're as legitimate as the reporters who wrote the sourced articles. Some might be inaccurate depending on what's mentioned in a given story.

I wrote a quick C program to compute the average for which the blocks are mentioned in that file and got 10.6.

I don't think that's the proper way to try and estimate the avg, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Nice! Pretty outstanding numbers.

Given there are a couple of issues (sampling bias and reporting exaggerations) so the number is probably higher than his actual career number, but it's probably not extremely far off.

Can your program compute season-by-season averages (regular seasons and postseasons separately)? If we can look at those breakdowns along with the number of samples per season, that would give us a great idea of how reasonable our estimates are.

Indeed. I'd say the sampling bias is probably the biggest issue. I'm sure there were quite a few low block games(0,1,2,3) that wen't unrecorded.

No, it's just a quick 5 minute program . That functionality shouldn't be too difficult to add though. I've got some things I'm working on right now, but I'll spend a little more time on it once I finish up those things.

one night in a off site location which I'm not sure, all these years gone by but I think it was Syracuse, it was Sixers and Bullets, this was an exhibition game, and Chamberlain had the flu or something. Anyhow he was barely moving at all, had like 5 points going onto the court after half time. This place was dead like you could almost see the tumbleweeds blowing past. Like watching golf almost.
Anyhow Bellamy said or did something because Wilt got all irate and he went into a block-fest. Walt Bellamy tried a layup WHAM. Well then wilt tagged that ball like Willie Mays and knocked that second Bells shot directly into old Don Ohl. Hit him right in the numbers.
And he just kind of looked sick, sort of dropped the ball on the floor some kinda way for a bounce pass and that guy threw up a shot which promptly got sailed into the seats. So then there was a kind of a huddle around Ohl he was just sittin there on the floor and you just knew there was no air in his body.

Well I remember that so well after all these years because that ball Wilt jacked into the bleachers never did go back on the court. Some old guy grabbed that ball and headed for the gate, he was gonna have a souvenir I guess.
Well the cops started after this old geezer and Alex Hannum the Sixers coach yelled 'hell boys let him go. You always let the fans keep the home run balls!!"
