Default why has the NBA gone pu$$ified over the years?

I'm watching this vid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=180Nf0cE_dI - and you'll see that the 80s were the most physical/violent decade and the NBA had fewer and fewer fights as the decades went on. The last big fight was Malice at the Palace and that was like 8 years ago.

What changed?

Fighting just to fight is just stupid. There is a difference between physical play and just being a dumbass and fighting. Rule changes and making the NBA more like the Euroleague has softened the league. Guys in the older days seemed more competitive and weren't friends on the court. Today's game you have opposing teams chatting, joking, and high fiving each other. Very different. I think Stern/NBA just wanted a more fan friendly NBA. So you have what you have now. I like physical play, but not playing dirty or dumbassery. There is a difference.

what changed was sports media. The vast majority of fans watch most bball as highlights and tend to overhype things like dunks. Well, allowing more offensive freedom/attack has led to better highlight reels for games.

^70's was more hardcore. Infact, there was like a NBA record 40-41 physical fights in the 76-77 season, I believe.

Advertisement happened. It sells better when perimeter players becomes huge stars. Nobody roots for giants. They killed big men's impact on the game by making everything easier for perimeter players.

Also Lebron James,Bosh,Howard,Paul all hurt NBA by leaving their franchises to team up with other franchise players.

Stern happened. Ever since he has been the leagues commissioner he has done everything in his powers to snuff out 3 great things that were once the heart and soul of the NBA;

*The natural aggression and contact that (should) come with any physical and highly competitive sport

*Man to man physical defense

*The center position

If you watch 60's documentaries about the NBA when it was still trying to be promoted (before it was big-time like today) one of the selling points the narrators of NBA films ALWAYS point out in every old film reel was "And don't let anyone tell you there is no contact in NBA basketball!" (then they proceed to show fighting/shoving/elbowing/falling/tackling/dirty plays etc).... I mean, they were once using the NBA's most physical or violent moments as a means to SELL TICKETS back then. Eventually they succeeded and the NBA became bigtime by the early 1980's and Bird and Magic's era is the most well-documented version of pre-sternball. And surprise surprise, most people LOVE watching those highlights from back then - there is so much more tenacity and natural physical play happening back then.

All his rules he has ever made since climbing the ladder was for his agenda to eliminate those three things and turn the NBA into a more PC mass-marketable ("safe for everyone") PG-rated soft sport - so that he can accumulate more advertisement revenue. No hand checking, no glaring, no bad mouthing... nothing. You might as well broadcast modern NBA basketball on the freaking Disney channel with what he has done to it.

Revisionist history happened. Where everyone thinks that every foul in the 70s-90s was a hard tough physical foul when in actuality these eras had more foul calls over todays game.

Your using a strawman here. And your flat out just stubbornly refusing to believe that the NBA was actually once a more physically aggresive game. Every rule Stern has ever been responsible for was to "open up the game" reduce violence, kill the center postion, etc. Don't be a dumbass and pretend the league wasn't using physical 1 on 1 defense with handchecks (vs today, non-contact zone defense) and getting into brawls more often than today. Nobody here is saying that "every play was a physical one back then!" We are simply pointing out the REALITY that things were different back then, and much more violence and physical play was tolerated back than vs today. There weren't nancy rules back then that tried to make the NBA such a disney-channel sport like today. If you got in a fight back then half the time you weren't even ejected FFS, the game continued as if nothing happened. You want to tell me shit hasn't changed?
