Default How good could have Grant Hill have been if it wasnt for injuries

What could have been his peak ? MVP? Could he put a team on his shoulders and get into the playoff's?? or was he a top SG who would light up the stats but didnt have much impact

He played 7 seasons before his injuries started, so we knew what he was going to be. If he were to win MVP, it would've been between 01-04, age 28-31, and I highly doubt he would've won MVPs over Duncan or KG since he just wasn't that good and T-Mac was a better teammate then anybody they had. I'm not even sure if he would've been the best player on his teams over T-Mac.

They make some Finals but probably lose to the Lakers or Spurs.

Hill did show some real improvements in his game in 2000. It was his shooting and to some extent overall skill set, though minus the additional range and accuracy on his jumper and extra aggressiveness as far as a scoring mentality, the rest of his game was as good by his 3rd year or so. But that did make a difference, Hill went from a second tier scorer at best, a guy who would average 20-22 ppg, but not dominate many games with his scoring to arguably the best perimeter scorer in the league that year. With Hill's ability to handle the ball as well as I've seen at that size, post up, rebound and pass better than some point guards at 6'8", the addition of a very consistent jumper out to 20-22 feet, borderline 3 point range and a first option mentality took him to another level. On paper, '97 looks like his best season, but I'd rather have 2000 Hill. With that being said, I'm not sure he'd ever be much better. He was already 27, and to put things in perspective, Shaq was also 28 that season, just 7 months older than Hill and clearly reached his peak. He never got better, he was the same in '01 and then started to lose a bit slowly for the next few seasons. Hill might have sustained his 2000 form longer, maybe even truly peaked a year or 2 later, but most players peak around 27-28 and don't get any better. There are some exceptions, but usually, you're as good as you will be by 28 at the latest.

I don't see any MVPs, in that 2000 season when he was already 27 and in his 6th season, he wasn't close to being worthy of MVP over Shaq or Duncan. He may have gotten the media hype one year to get one, or get close, there was some of that hype in '97, iirc, but in 2000, he was borderline top 5 at best, in fact, I have him 7th behind Shaq, Duncan, KG, Zo, Malone and C-Webb. Teaming up with T-Mac also makes any MVPs doubtful. T-Mac was supposed to the Pippen to Hill's Jordan, but this likely would have been reversed since T-Mac ended up better than many, including myself thought he'd be. By '02, I'd say he was better than any version of Hill I'd seen, certainly by '03.

I do think he had the ability to carry a team in the playoffs, but I'd have to see how the more skilled and aggressive 2000 Hill fared because prior to that, he had been pretty underwhelming in the playoffs, there were some 4th quarters in key games and losses that would have gotten Lebron crucified. Would have been fun to watch T-Mac and Hill in the early 00's East, though. They definitely could have made a lot of noise and contended for the finals. Probably wouldn't have won, at least not without other additions, but seeing those 2 deep in the playoffs would have been great.

Perennial top 10 player. Double digit All-Star appearances, but no MVP's. Could have won a title if paired with a Star bigman. I don't think him and T-Mac, or another star wing-player in general, would have gotten it done ala Jordan and Pippen.

Pippen without the defense. Which is quite amazing still...
Think Tracy McGrady without the jumpshot.

In his last season with Detroit he averaged 25-5-6 on 49% shooting.
In todays league he is probably the 3rd or 4th best player, right around Chris Paul level.

And we have to remember the era he put up 26/7/5, 49%. Look at the top scorers that year, not only was Hill 3rd in scoring, but was unusually efficient for the era and a real all around player.

1.Shaq- 29.7 ppg, 13.6 rpg, 3.8 apg, 2.8 TO, 3 bpg, 57.4 FG%, 57.8 TS%
2.Iverson- 28.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4.7 apg, 3.3 TO, 2.1 spg, 42.1 FG%, 44.6 eFG%, 49.6 TS%
3.Hill- 25.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 5.2 apg, 3.2 TO, 1.4 spg, 48.9 FG%, 50.1 eFG%, 56.5 TS%
4.Carter- 25.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 3.9 apg, 2.2 TO, 1.3 spg, 1.1 bpg, 46.5 FG%, 49.3 eFG%, 54.3 TS%
5.Malone- 25.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 3.7 apg, 2.8 TO, 1 spg, 50.9 FG%, 58.2 TS%
6.Webber- 24.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 4.6 apg, 2.9 TO, 1.7 bpg, 1.6 spg, 48.3 FG%, 49.2 eFG%, 53 TS%
7.Payton- 24.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 8.9 apg, 2.7 TO, 1.9 spg, 44.8 FG%, 50.2 eFG%, 53.5 TS%
8.Stackhouse- 23.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4.5 apg, 3.8 TO, 1.3 spg, 42.8 FG%, 45.6 eFG%, 54.5 TS%
9.Duncan- 23.2 ppg, 12.4 rpg, 3.2 apg, 3.3 TO, 2.2 bpg, 49 FG%, 55.5 TS%
10.Garnett- 22.9 ppg, 11.8 rpg, 5 apg, 3.3 TO, 1.6 bpg, 1.5 spg, 49.7 FG%, 50.7 eFG%, 54.5 TS%

The only person who scored more than Hill and was more efficient was Shaq, the other player who scored more than Hill was far less efficient and wasn't quite the all around player. Hill's numbers were also lowered a bit by a game he played 20 minutes in around late January and another 25 minute game 2 games later in addition to playing just 16 minutes in his last regular season. Before any of that, he had been averaging 27.8 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 5.8 apg on 49.1% in his first 38 games before that first game where he was limited due to injuries and was the first game he failed to score double figures in.

Hill was destined for greatness, just a joy to watch him play before injuries
