a good tweet from jon krolik on the subject of rick barry teaching players free throws

Biggest mystery in pro sports: Brent and Jon Barry were both good FT shooters, but why didn't THEY learn it underhanded?

Simple, because free throws put you in rhythm for your other jump shots. Why give away those opportunities when you are a great shooter and prob can't get much better regardless of technique.

On the other hand, Howard has no business shooting jumpers and doesn't use free throws for rhythm.

I was thinking something very similar. People always point to Brent Barry's amazing display and assume that anybody who imitate's him would have similar results but we have literally no other players at the NBA level who have had success with it.

If it was so effective wouldn't someone else have attempted it?

Because you will look like a f4660t doing it grandma sytle! You lose "street cred" if you do it and will be the laughingstock of your peers especially in today's game.

what he needs to do is learn how to shoot the ball and not flick it towards the rim.

he needs to get it out of his head. Do something like Karl Malone and talk to yourself to calm the nerves. He is pressing way too much at the line

When you're shooting nearly 40% from the line, the mechanics at least have something to do with it.
