Hopefully they once and for all declare that banning gay marriage is unconstitutional.

Other than social engineering, is there a legitimate argument to be made for the tax and government benefits that come with being married? For or against, whatever, I just don't understand the argument that marriage should be government defined.

I hate guys, but this issue should not be a discussion. Either you support liberty and freedom or you don't. Anyone who opposes a person's ability to pursue their own happiness in this most basic way is an enemy of freedom, the Declaration of Independance, and Constitution, period.

This.
I was told marriage is strange kind of thing, given by church, cancelled by government (with church deliberately looking the other way, because they do not condone cancelling the oath against god). Legalizing the marriage by government would mean goverment starting to issue marriages, right? Marriage becoming non-church union?
That would mess things up.

It's BS that this is still an issue, give all people the same rights..
Seriously, if someone's bothered by gay people, that person is a sad person with worthless values.

Im sure similar things were said about blacks, women, etc.

The fact is, the world is changing, and you're either progressive, and stay with the times or you get left behind talking about how "never will be"

Gays will eventually and rightfully have the same rights as the rest of us. It's ridiculous to act as though the "sanctity of marriage" must be preserved in a world where celebs crap on it, as well as various others.

California voted to keep gay marriage illegal. You know that right?

Anywayzzz, InspiredLebowski had the best post. Government needs to GTFO of marriage altogether.

God I'm so sick of hearing about gay marriage. Gay people account for like 2% of the population yet the way this country acts about gay rights you'd think it was 50/50. They aren't hurting anybody, let them get married for fcks sake.

I'm a republican btw.

The state has no business telling people who they can and can't marry, let alone using that information to decide benefits and protections afforded under law.

Government has no business taking a stance on marriage.

Surprised to see you support gay marriage considering how much you side with Republicans in other threads. The way you expressed it shows a perspective that I wish other Republicans take. Republicans are always touting about freedom and such (and how the military has fought for our freedom and liberty), so I wish they saw it as you just described for gay people. Unfortunately, the religious foundation of many Republicans keep them from seeing it as a freedom, liberty, and equality issue.
