Unfortunately, the religious foundation of many Republicans keep them from seeing it as a freedom, liberty, and equality issue.

Republicans will get it soon.

Just think how many of them are in the closet right now.

I'm conservative but I'm 100% in favor of gay marriage rights. It's a matter of separation of church and state. My state passed a ridiculous referendum to adopt an anti gay amendment to the state constitution earlier this year. It passed by an overwhelming majority (although the cool parts of the state: Charlotte, Chapel Hill, Boone, voted against it). It spits in the face of both the state and federal constitution in defining marriage upon a strict Baptist (for the most part) definition. It basically forces a narrow, highly suspect (ever read Leviticus?) religious view as cause to discriminate against a segment of the population.

I am so hoping that the Supreme Court does the right thing and declares the California amendment unconstitutional. That will open the floodgates for individual state courts to do the same.
