Default More important to a team's defense... Coach/System or Players?

What the title says...

Which of the two actually has more of an impact on whether a team's defense is good? A good defensive minded coach with a great system, or good individual defenders?

This is a tough question. In some cases, such as the 1996-97 Bulls, it seems like certain players had more of an impact than the coach and/or system; however, in other cases, such as the 2005-06 NY Knicks, even with a bunch of talented players, such as what was supposed to be the best backcourt in the league at the time w/ Steve Francis & Stephon Marbury both starting, it looked like they just couldn't play together under a former NBA Champion coach and his system (Larry Brown).

I suppose it's a 50/50. You need a good system with players who can play basketball well under that good system; otherwise, you're just going to be like the 2005-06 Knicks, a talented looking team that couldn't play its way out of a shopping bag.

For defense, it's the coach.

its players x 100000. Defense never collapses because the system is bad, it collapses due to lackadaisical effort and players not paying attention.

You can have the greatest defensive system ever with the greatest coach, but it's not going to work unless the players buy into what the coach is selling.

It's 50/50, some players will flourish defensively regardless of the system or coach, some will be worthless without that.

lackadaisical effort is a prime sign of a weak coach.

If he can't get his players fired up he must be pole-axed immediately

Coach/system for sure. A team's defense is about positioning, chemistry, and effort more than it is physical ability. That's up to the coach/system.

A few great defensive players can't make a team good defensively unless the coach is competent in defense. A great defensive coach can make a team good defensively with sub-par defensive players.

If players don't buy into the system and put in the effort, which is principally what defense is, I don't care who the coach is.

It's great to say that a good coach makes them buy in, but it's not reality in today's game. The lowest paid guy in the room is also the first one to get fired when things go wrong. All it takes is a locker room lawyer or two to corrupt the mindset of a team, and the coach has little chance to overcome that.

Coach/system.

Just take the Bucks... I mean, most of those guys were terrible defenders before Skiles came to town.

a great defensive coach can make terrible defensive players good defenders. great individual defenders by themselves can't make their teammates better defenders.
