Default Re: Looking like Chip Kelly is headed to Cleveland

I'm not really getting the negativity toward Kelly. I don't think his offense is really a gimmick. It is all about destroying gap control. Yeah, he does it with some funky formations and flashy plays, but at the end of the day, his philosophy is all about breaking down defensive fundamentals.

Hey, if Bill Belichick is willing to adapt his gameplans in-part around things Kelly innovated, I'm willing to give the guy a shot. Maybe he works, maybe he doesn't, but what do the Browns have to lose at this point? Everyone expects this team to be terrible every year, including us fans.

A dramatic move like this can go one of two ways... Massive success or utter disaster. I'm willing to take that risk, at this point in the franchise's history. Back in the 1980s and early-90s when the team was a consistent playoff team and contender? I would be more timid about promoting such a move. After 13 years of a horrible franchise? Let's do this.

I feel like the team has its stud receiver who is a potential matchup nightmare. His name is Josh Gordon. Kid is just figuring out the position and he was pretty much unarguably the best rookie WR in the league this season.

Also, like I said, even if the Weeden pick doesn't pan out, Richardson, Schwartz, Winn and Hughes are all looking like excellent picks. And possibly Benjamin.

I really have very few complaints about the way this team has drafted the last few years. Heckert has put together a ton of young talent here... So much so that the majority of Browns fans wanted him to stay.

The QB position may still be in flux, but other spots have been upgraded significantly recently (including WR).

He knows how to build a winning programm.

I really like the hire for them. But he needs time, he needs to find his quarterback.

I guess the Browns had hoped to hammer out a deal tonight and were scheduled to meet Kelly for dinner. However, his lunch with the Eagles has stretched into dinner also with the Eagles.

Hopefully, this is not a sign Philadelphia is moving in on Kelly.

I think you should be open to pretty much anyone and give them a chance. I wasn't thrilled when the Skins got Spurrier, but I gave him a chance and even ended up defending him on occasion even though he sucked. I don't think Kelly will be as dumb as Spurrier was in the NFL.

Also, it is looking like the Browns' backup plan is Syracuse coach Doug Marrone. They met with him earlier in the day.

I'm surprised Marrone is generating so much interest, he used to be the Saints OC (but Sean Payton should get most of the credit for those offenses).

I follow Syracuse football because my GF is from there, and he has turned the program from an embarrassment to a winning program. But it's just surprising to me that he's generating so much NFL interest.

I think he is a pretty interesting prospect. He has the pedigree by being able to learn under an offensive mastermind like Payton. Then, he proved he could run the show at Syracuse by, as you said, turning a program completely around in a short period.

I'd actually be pretty happy with Marrone. Although it wouldn't be quite as big a splash as Kelly, it wouldn't shock me if he were the better professional HC.

I definitely think he could be a good NFL coach, he has turned Syracuse around in a very short period of time.

And we all know Kelly is probably going to get a ridiculous amount of money, so hiring Marrone may be the better plan.

I don't know, maybe I'm just surprised he's generating so much interest because he's just not a big name at all. But I'm sure he'll be a good NFL coach.

He's the type of coach NFL teams should look to grab. Like you said he rebuilt the program from scratch and he's able to win without highly recruited players.

Look for him to get Ryan Nassib to be their QBOF now

Looks like Browns are going in a different direction.

Unfortunately, Philly now the front runner.
