What made the Joker great was you knew nothing about him. Some of the best villains are mysterious or unexplained. Darth Vader (OT up until the end of Jedi), Boba Fett, Anton Chigurh, Nurse Ratched etc. Who are these people? Why are they doing what they are doing? What is wrong with them?
