I smoked pot 4-5 times every day when I was in high school and my first couple years of college. I think it permanently affected my short term memory, and I have no doubt that I would have performed much better at school and in life had I not been a smoker.

I think it should be legal, but people need to realize that it does not come without negative effects. Too many stoners try to take an extreme position that pot is not harmful at all. Like everything else it has it's pros and cons, but arguing with a stoner you'd think weed is the answer to every problem facing mankind.

Happened to me first time I smoked. It was real scary, constant deja vu with "I'm going to die" feeling, my heart was pounding like crazy. It didn't last very long tho, I was so high that I stopped caring after few minutes

All his "conclusions" aren't particularly insightful:
-Smoking harms your lungs
-External agents that have a strong effect on the brain are bad for developing brains.
-Mental state altering drugs can empower or trigger existing mental health conditions
-People who use mental state altering drugs continuously might experience negative affects in their social and professional life.

The same could of course be said of alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, a large number of non-prescription drugs and virtually all other drugs that affect your brain in any way. (switch a few organs around of course)

Of course this is all true, but it's a calculated risk you should be allowed to take based on all the incredibly positive uses Marijuana has. This is were personal choice comes into play.

Also the writer of this article:

Quote:
"I'm a conservative Republican, have been all my adult life. I volunteered for the Reagan campaign in 1980. I've attended every Republican convention since 1988. I was president of the Federalist Society chapter at my law school, worked on the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal and wrote speeches for President Bush—not the "Read My Lips" Bush, the "Axis of Evil" Bush. I served on the Giuliani campaign in 2008 and voted for John McCain in November. I supported the Iraq War and (although I feel kind of silly about it in retrospect) the impeachment of Bill Clinton. I could go on, but you get the idea.[34]"

He's a politician who is looking at this issue from a very narrow perspective.

why do people feel the need to point out that other things are also bad?

yes, alcohol and tobacco are bad too...and? not many say otherwise

if you drink enough water you could die...so what? we are talking about pot, not other bad things

probably because those substances are legal and marijuana is not.

If society deems the negative effects of drugs like alcohol, nicotine and caffeine are an acceptable risk to society, the same should apply to marijuana. Because they largely exhibit negative effects and have an impact (in terms of severity) on your mental state to the same degree.

It's like making Scotch illegal but Bourbon legal

legal issues are another thread though...I don't have a problem with pot being legal...the article wasn't trying to debate legal issues either, just point out health issues

probably the same reason you always point out marijuana is bad. i really never understood why other people care about what other people ingest into their bodies. yes we know marijuana is not perfectly safe, people have been saying it can bring out mental illnesses for decades i have not read one thing i didn't already know about in your article.

You.....haven't read the article?

This is the very first sentence of the article: "Last week, I joined the board of a new organization to oppose marijuana legalization".

there are plenty of smokers that deny pot having any actual harmful effects...and you know this

no one says that about booz and cigs though...everyone is fully aware those can kill youw

If I thought it was obvious as alcohol or tobacco I wouldn't have made the thread, and that article probably wouldn't exist...but to many people it isn't obvious

okay, that might be his agenda with this but not mine...I said the opposite in the OP

his main basis was to point out the harmful effects...

he also folllowed it up with this LJJ

Quote:
The new group rejects the "war on drugs" model. It agrees that we don't want to lock people up for casual marijuana use -- or even stigmatize them with an arrest record. But what we do want to do is send a clear message: Marijuana use is a bad choice.

Addiction and abuse of almost anything is bad for you. Thanks for the update in common sense.

For the purpose of proving his thesis statement that it should be illegal.
