James Shields has been getting the short end of the stick all year. He's pitched less than 6 innings only twice, and never less than 5 innings. The Royals are averaging just 2.76 runs per Shields start. The Royals have scored 2 or fewer runs behind Shields in 15 of his 29 starts and 0 runs in 5 of his starts. In his first 15 starts, the Royals averaged just barely 2 runs in his starts.
Just recently have the Royals started scoring behind Shields. His last 5 starts, the Royals have put up a combined 20 runs behind him. His first 24 starts, they only put up a combined 60 runs.
Man you jinxed him. Dude got absolutely lit up today
Reds 2.0 back from the division lead after last night. Joey Votto snapped out of his slump in a big way.
The NL central is just fascinating right now. Must watch theater with 3 really good teams. Stuff like this is why baseball is my favorite sport. Nothing beats the stretch run.
On another note, since I live in the area and find myself paying attention to the Rays, they are dying at the vine. Seemed like a playoff spot was a lock at one point, but now they are holding on for dear life.
Reds are on fire! Won 6 out of their last 7 against some very good teams, and some of the best pitchers in the game. Just 1.5 back of STL, who swept Pitt. Reds face the Cubs this year and are 13-3 against them this year, Cards go to Milwaukee, and the Pirates have a tough best in a trip to Texas.
The Pirates clinched their first winning season after being stuck on 81 wins for awhile. They got to Darvish late in a pitching duel between Cole/Darvish. Does it seem weird to anyone that Darvish seems to come up on the losing end as often as he does despite pitching great. The Rangers are a solid offensive ball club but they seem to give him no run support, especially as of late.
However, from what I've seen from Darvish seems like he does have some command issues with his fastball and is too reliant on his breaking pitches. Reading some of the links posted by Ranger fans bloggers are interesting as well on why he is having some issues getting his team more Ws when he is on the mound vs. advance stat metric arguments. Seems like an interesting debate considering how the Cy Young award is going to generate a similar discussion if it has not already.
