This year’s festivities include a new format where Eastern Conference players will compete versus Western Conference players in a two-round competition. The highest scoring East competitor and the highest scoring West competitor from the Team Round will compete head-to-head to determine the champion. Fan voting will open at the beginning of the Championship Round and the player with the highest percentage of combined votes from all platforms will be champion.
Fans will be able to cast votes for the champion in one of four ways:
1.) SMS Text Message* – Text the player’s last name to 38657 (DUNKS)
2.) Twitter - Tweet #SpriteSlam with the player’s last name
4.) Log on to NBA.com from any computer or mobile device.
So pretty much he's up against James White/Gerald Green to make it to the 2nd round, so it's a 2 man contest really for that "Eastern Conference" slot. He's a major dark horse.

Depending on what Bledsoe brings, think it's conceivable that the top 3 dunkers are all the East guys. James White is going to win this because people have been begging for an NBA team to give him a roster spot for like a decade just so he could participate, this baby is already over unless he fails (unlikely given his history).

It's funny, I watched all the dunk compliations for each othe dunkers for the contest that they put on NBA.com. They all had some really nice ones and some of them were jam packed (even Ross has a lot of good ones for only having played half a season.) James White had like 3 dunks total and was on different teams for each dunk, and all 3 dunks sucked. You couldn't even put together an NBA compliation for him because this is the first he's held an NBA roster spot long enough to even qualify to be in the contest. He was the first person the NBA asked, and they are desperate for him to bring some of that flair that he's brought to all those other highschool, overseas and street dunk contests. I feel like it's gonna be a let down given how many of these he's participated in, his age now at 30, and a declining amount of athleticism and flair. But at the same time, his hype alone will probably carry him to victory ala Blake Griffin and Dwight Howard.
Re: Terrance Ross Selected for the 2013 Slam Dunk Contest!
I don't like the whole East vs West thing, because I don't think one of the three west dunkers would make it to the finals if they went against White/Green/Ross in the first round.
I'm not a fan of the whole East vs. West thing either. This is a dunk contest not an all-star game, and the best dunkers should be the ones making it through, regardless of what conference they play for. Also taking away the 3rd round and giving the fans total control over who wins in the final are dumb ideas. I get that you believe that fan involvement = more interest, but maybe at least have the judges judge the round and average it out with the fan vote. Because just like with all-star game votes, fans don't always vote on the best player/dunker, they vote for who they like the most. And right now that's between Gerald Green and James White, whichever one of those two gets the East slot takes home the trophy.
