Yeah man it's wild. It's way beyond "mind blown" for them I bet. Apparently there is a really low suicide rate in the actual country though, even for the population that is born into the "work" camps. And right across the border, baller ass South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world.
there have been studies that show humans only feel "envy" relative to their peers. so, since DPRK is a communist country and everyone is supposedly more equal in terms of receiving the same style of life, there's a lesser sense of envy, which is the road to unhappiness. so when DPRK villagers receive jack sh!t from food rations from the government, they look around and see that everyone else all got jack sh!t as well, so they all just learn to deal with it... life sucks, but at least everyone's suffering the same in their eyes...
but down in hi tech south korea, it's a different and capitalistic nation so there's wide range of income inequality everywhere. some are living the high life, and some aren't. the good life is totally in front of their faces, but not all get to participate, so this easily makes the ones who aren't in it to feel completely left out. and maybe that's why suicide rates are higher in south korea...
North Korea is a joke. They got squat. They don't even have machinery for 19th century farming. So why is the US so afraid of this tiny ass weakling?? The're cockroaches.. they just don't pose a real threat.
the media keeps bringing our attention to nothing.
The USSR, on the other hand, during the cold war, they were serious muscle mofo's. their weapon technology were legit and on par or even better than the US's. but the soviet disbanded and russia is different now. the real major military power now is actually china, but they own all our fking bonds. they ain't going to start anything with the US and consequently burn their own money. everything is too globalized.
but north korea??? it's a joke that so much attention is given to them.
South Korea is like the Israel of Asia. I think it's more about the US using SK as a hub to keep an eye on China and Asia, and somewhat about keeping Chinese influence out of SK. NK is a nice buffer between SK and China. Because NK exists, the US still has a reason to keep a shitload of troops/bases in SK. If SK takes over NK, or if they merge, Korea will most definitely seek military independence from the US, and the US will lose their main military hub in East Asia. There will also be no buffer between China and SK anymore. Korea will also become much more powerful, NK is actually a lot bigger than SK. I think the #1 thing that the US is worried about is Korea, Japan, and China creating a "big 3" axis power. Although these countries have a rocky history, it would be fairly easy for them to form an economic/militaristic triad with NK out of the way or assimilated. The US would be in a looooooot of trouble if this were to happen. Just my take on it.

Yeah man I think that's totally a major reason why. Plus, at the most basic level, when people are struggling, their survival instinct overpowers everything.

well, i agree the *real* military force in asia is actually china. the chinese already have the power to engage in serious sh!t with anyone. but i just don't see any type of military conflict happening between the US and china. at least probably not in my lifetime. both sides are too invested into each other and got way too much to lose if either side does anything dumb. it's like a bad marriage. both parties are not in love with each other, but they can't just separate neither so they'll just have to put up with each other and grumble how much they are sick of each other.

Well, North Korean citizens really feel like they live in a socialist paradise of some sort because they're never told anything else. To them, absolutely nothing is wrong because they have nothing to compare their situation to.
Food shortages and all that...easy to cover-up and deal with when your vision of reality is that the rest of the world suffers worse than you do.

No way China and Japan form some sort of deep alliance. Too much hatred and distrust from WWII.

I think it could happen, I mean, they still do business with each other. Japan did the same thing to Korea that they did to China, and those two countries have a working relationship. China and Japan are fighting over some islands as we speak though....
