Last time I checked if you score more than your opponent you win the game 100% of the time.

I'm talking about individual players; why is scoring the single determinant of the greatness of a player. Shouldn't defense, intangibles, assists, hustle plays, etc. also be taken into consideration. All of those contribute to a win. You know something is wrong when Kobe wh*res are calling this idiot gawd when he puts up 30+ without a win.

I am simply asking for a logical explanation as to why scoring is the single most important factor in determining the true greatness of a player. That's all. Innocent question.

I disagree. You are talking about a specific fanbase of a single player. If anything, the ability to score has been underrated lately. People discredit some of the elite scorers because their shooting % or efficiency rating is low.

We have too many box score nerds these days that rather than watching as many games as they can skim-read through stats till they decide they have enough information about a player's value.

The problem with this is that they don't take into account how offenses are run. Allen Iverson could give you 18 points on 33% shooting one night and still win you the game because offense focused so much on him that he opened up the game for everyone else. On the same game Aaron McKie would give 18points on 50% and no one on their right mind who watched the game would tell you he was more important to the offense. However, someone who does nothing but look at the box score will tell you 'meh, Iverson is an overrated scorer, he chucks his way to high scoring numbers' or 'if you give McKie the same amouint of shots per game, he would average almost 30ppg too'.

It is great that the amount of stats available has grown exponentially but this also leads to misconceptions when they are not put into perspective.

You should edit your first post and copy and paste the bolded part, else people are going to go onto talk about thing unrelated to what you meant.

scoring 30 points is a big negative when you're shooting at piss poor percentages (when you can instead help your teammates score at higher "team"' percentages by playing smart basketball), and the guys he's covering over the course of a game score more than 30 pts

See kobe

It's not. It's only important if it's effecient. For the team it's important.. of course.. but for individual players it isn't.

It's important to be able to score to a certain degree for individual players, otherwise they become a liability and defenses can sag off of them and help others.. but in terms of 30ppg or 40ppg it's not.

As long as the team as other scoring weapons it's not important. Balanced scoring is harder to defend against.. but in the clutch you do need someone who can get off contested shots.. players who can get their shot off no matter what.. but you don't need to be able to score 30ppg to do that.

Players like Durant are very hard to stop in the playoffs though. Superstar calls.. and getting hot.. putting the team on their back etc. It's important in those situations. But in the regular season.. for most teams it's not important if their best player is 20ppg or 30ppg.. what's important is if the team scores 90ppg or 105ppg.

And then there is defense.. which is just as if not more important than offense. Because offense can be streaky and up and down.. it comes in runs.. but good team defense is a constant that can win games even when the shots aren't falling.

If this is your question, you should put it in the OP because I read it as a team question just like the others did
