Default Aussies, please tell me about Adelaide.

There is a potential job opportunity in the future for me and I'd be living in Adelaide for 3 weeks out of every 5 weeks. The other two are in the outback.

Main things I want to know:

-Cost of living vs. USA (I hear it's 3x)
-How single friendly it is
-Is it fun?
-Nice downtown area
-Transportation to areas like perth/melbourne for a long weekend or something
-General info about the city

I've done a bit of googling and seems like a sweet city. I'd love to go to some rugby matches.

I used to live there for about 7 years.

Nightlife is not that extraordinary. Its one of the smaller main cities, but as far as single life, there are some nice looking girls. Volleyball is very popular there, so you'll find great chicks in that regard.

Fun? Not so sure what you consider fun. There isn't too much to do outside of going to the city center. There are great things scattered just outside the city. Hahndorf, a nice German settlement type area that has great food and what not. Barossa Valley, if you're into your wine and drinking. Nice views when driving out there to the different wineries.

Its very easy to get around though. You won't ever get really lost. Its all built on one big square grid essentially. Well designed city. Melbourne is always good and easy to get to. My friends and I used to do it quite regularly, even by car, its a fun drive. Nice places along the way, and you can drive by the coast. Perth I wouldn't advise visiting much. Its identical to Adelaide pretty much. Hit up Melbourne or Brisbane, which is where I'm currently living now. I've been to all the major cities, and Melbs and Brisbane are the two best.

Apart from that, a very friendly city, lots of churches... A bit higher than average age than the other major cities, but nothing too bad. Just don't expect too much from the nightlife. Go to Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane for that. Its also great for surfing if you're into that.

Anything else you need to know?

How long ago did you live in Adelaide? Been living there for 27 of my 27 years on Earth.

Balla, you won't be going to Rugby in Adelaide, no team here. Rugby is more an NSW/QLD sport, aussie rules football is the sport you'll have to settle with. Also have soccer, baseball and basketball. Like Plowking said, nightlife can be pretty dull, but that depends on what kind of things you're interested in. I've never had a problem with it, but i'm not a huge party nightclub guy and am content with going to the football with mates or going to a concert or something. Beaches can be nice in summer, only about 20 minutes from Adelaide CBD to Glenelg beach.

Like Plowking said, not as exciting as the east coast states, but it takes an hour to fly to Melbourne, so it's not far to go if you ever want to go over there.

Thanks for the post. And yeah, I'm not into the club scene much but I was wondering how different it would be in Australia. Probably not much.

As long as there are some decent pubs to hang out at and what not, I'd be fine. Are there public leagues for soccer?

And I've never lived by the beach before. I think that would be pretty sick. The beach looks nice on google images.

I haven't been to Adelaide in a few years, but over in Perth the cost of living is pretty huge, I think you'll find the price of things here in Oz quite a shock. Food and alcohol particularly. Rents are probably cheaper than what you're used to, assuming you're not being put up by your company anyway.

Just basing this on being in the states last year and being pleasantly shocked at how cheap food and booze is over there.

This is the Oz national soccer league.

I bet you'd have a good time if you went to an AFL game too.

CoL exploded in Perth due to the mining boom. It's pretty crazy how much rent can be over there. Food and that sort of stuff is probably more expensive, but everyone makes liveable wages and you don't have to worry about tipping, which I kept forgetting to do when I was in the US.

Plenty of pubs and those sort of things to hang out in, nothing to worry abouit there.

You still in Adelaide? I can't remember when I was there but do you guys have poker machines? That's honestly a huge factor in not being able to find a decent cheap pub meal over here. Pokies are only at the casino so there aren't any pubs where you can get a cheap subsidized feed, I hate it.

cost will be a surprise, we get screwed on things from other countries like electronics and imported foods. I've never been to Adelaide (I'm in Melbourne) but i've been told it's a pretty boring city, domestic flights can be had for like $60 to melbourne or sydney though and I think it's only an hour or so to Melbourne. All of Australia is pretty laid back compared to U.S.A though. Adelaide have a basketball team in the NBL you can go see and there's also cricket up there if you want to learn a sport kind of like baseball but MUCH better :P

Yep, still here. Yea, they all have pokies, can usually get a decent feed for $10 or so, it's pretty good.

Adelaide? **** Adelaide. Adelaide is the joke of all other states.. the asshole of Australia.

Move to a real state (VIC/WA/QLD/NSW). OR.. if you're really in the rockies as your location suggests (which Rockies? Colorado?), then don't ****ing come here. I'll trade you my AUS passport for your USA one any day of the week.

Arguably the Wine-Tasting capital of Australia..

Visit Barossa Valley. You will not regret it (If you like Wine)

Also, Adelaide does not currently have a rugby(NRL) team(Like you mentioned)

Sorry to tell you but Adelaide is the shit major city of Australia. It's basically a much shitter version of Perth. The only good things about Adelaide are the Barossa Valley and the fact that it has German roots so you know things will run smoothly and the food is good.

Ive been all over Australia and from my and other opinions the general consensus is; Melbourne and Sydney are the two best overall cities, Gold Coast is a great place to visit and Perth is the best place to live. Canberra and Adelaide are both shit.

All cities in Australia are expensive as everyone makes a fair amount and we dont tip over here.

Go to a footy game. Everyone always loves that. Everyone also lives within 20 mins of the beach as well which is great.

Adelaide isn't on fire or under water as much as the other states.

Good shit. Let it be known I do live in a shitty town right now and most of my work will take me to shitty towns. I don't think Adelaide will be that bad but obviously it's short flights away to other Aussie cities. I'm single and have very little debt and will have some decent time off.

As long as there's a gym, local pubs/bars, city soccer leagues, new things for me to try, THE BEACH, decent looking women, I'll be fine. Also, there will be great outdoor scenery and shit for me to see as well. I'm PADI open water certified as well.

Everything will be new to me...so it'll be an adventure.

Not to mention cheap access to SE Asia too.

Thanks for the responses.
