Default Why doesn't Dwight Howard have basic fundamentals?

We all know that he is a tenth of a point BELOW the league average in scoring from post up opportunities, but here are some other basic things D12 can't do at a basic level:

Set screens
Roll off a pick
hit a 10 foot jumpshot
shoot freethrows
Keep the ball above his head
Pass out of a double team
Not goaltend
Catch a bounce pass

How did he get so far in organized basketball without having learned these basic skills from any of the many coaches he has had in his life? How was this allowed to happen?

And he was so athletic he was still a decent player even without any basic skills.

But now his athleticism is gone, he is basically Robert Sacre levels.

When even Nash cant make you look good, you're done. But seriously the Lakers have horrible spacing with Metta Black Hole being left alone to chuck by opposing teams and Kobe having trouble doign catch n shoots. Nash and the bigs have no space for pick and roll or postups.

The whole Kobe facilitation allowed Nash to be the spot up shooter to create some room. But even then the team has so many problems it's not even worth going over. And then the injuries, moods and age.

because he always relied on his freak athleticism, however, since suffering a debilitating injury the concerns that always existed about his game are starting to surface.

For all the criticism Dwight gets.. he's averaged 16 and 11.. and that's on 57% FG.. and his FGA are down. Turnovers are about the same. Blocks as high as they ever were. His rebounds are a bit down as well.. but he's not a scrub. Some things go beyond the stats.. but he's not a scrub.

The funniest thing that Dwight and other centres do.. is block the ball out of bounds.. so then the opponents get another posession and it really didn't even change anything.. especially if they then get a 3 instead of a 2. Catch the ball? Knock it to a teammate? Those are the sorts of things that don't get covered on the stat sheets but yeah.

He's not dominating but given how much he gets talked about.. there is quotes from him or Kobe every day.. you'd think he's putting up 10 and 5 or something. And it's not just the fans or media that are making noise. The players in the locker room are making noise too. No wonder the team and franchise are so much in the shit right now. You could notice the problems 2 weeks into the season.

He actually was doing some of these things in Orlando, such as the screen/rolls, and in 2011, he was hitting a decent amount face up bank shots. Passing out of double teams has always been something I wanted to see him improve on, but he was doing that pretty well last season.

Right now, he's a shell of his former self, and not just athletically.

How many of those points were spoon-fed by Kobe and Nash? Dwight can't make anything but dunks. His hook shot is is a prayer and airballs 30% of the time. It's as effective as abstinence education was on his baby-momma having ass.

Well let's think. He went from a team with 4 three point threats and incredible spacing/chemistry to a team with 0 three point threats, no chemistry and less spacing than a sardine can. What do you think is going to happen?

It's either that back injury is severly limiting his movement and flexibility or he simply is not giving a shit anymore.

Against the Celtics, he was standing there staring at Jeff Green coming into the paint from the baseline, and Jeff did a slight up fake and just powered up over him for a bucket. Dwight 2 years ago is swatting that into the Atlantic. yesterday all he could do was put two arms straight up, not even jumping 5 inches off the ground. It was really eye opening for me

2. like others said he relies on his freakish athleticism
3. probably doesn't care to work on his skills like the other great bigs did.

This dude is a joke, brings the ball down EVERY.. SINGLE.. TIME he gets a rebound, and gets it stripped LMAO, Dude can't even set a proper screen right!!!

Dude has been outplayed by almost every center he's gone up against this season.

He went from dunking on HS kids to playing in the NBA. Seems like none of the modern day bigmen are taught post fundamentals in HS. Coach just tells them to dunk the ball, I guess.

Young big men don't play enough games vs competent competition before entering the NBA. At that point their development slows significantly due to several factors (limited practice time, wear and tear of an NBA season, ego).

That he has been considered the top center in the league the last few years is more an indictment of the skill level of many current bigs than it is an endorsement of Howard.

There was an article titled "The Value of a Block" that came out a few years ago containing some advanced stats and it showed that Howard had the least valuable blocks in the game (Duncan had the most valuable) in terms of retaining the ball, blocking shots with high expected value, and goaltending. Should take all advanced stats with a grain of salt, but Howard himself has admitted to not having interest in keeping possession of the ball (below). I can kind of understand, but still Howard doesn't seem that mentally sharp.

Quote:
“They told me to grab them, but sometimes blocking a shot and sending it out of bounds shows a team it’s not going to be easy to come in the paint,” Howard said. “Grabbing it, that’s like being a showoff or something like that, even though it is kind of cool.”

Because his coaches in high school told him "You're enormous and athletic and will soon be a millionaire. Fundamentals are for nerds."

You don't have to teach tall or athletic and those two things are prized in the NBA.
