Default Does LeBron vs. Durant resemble Magic vs. Bird at all?

I just heard this on a podcast from the Jazz local radio PBP a few days ago. I thought it was interesting because a lot of people like to think LeBron is similar to Magic.

Maybe.

It can definitely be the next great rivalry. If they meet in the Finals again it already will be.

The difference is, you take scoring away from bird and you still get a 80% bird, but if you take scoring away from durant, you have basically nothing left

Ofcourse there is some similarities... but the rivalry similarity is nowhere close and never will be, Magic & Bird were back and forth 24-7... championship games since college, one loses, one wins, one loses, one wins and so on their entire career almost... Lebron/Durant dont have something like that, they actually dont have any rivalry, it has been all Lebron, it might be a rivalry in the future though....

Magic/Bird were also equally matched overall talent wise....... Lebron & Durant are not... Lebron is better than Durant, he is overall a more talented version of Magic and Durant is overall a somewhat less talented version of Bird... MUCH less vision/passing skills, less of a rebounder, less bball IQ and hell probably even less defense... when you think about it Bird is actually more similar to Lebron (this season) than Durant is... think of a more athletic Larry Bird (which therefore gives him more defense and versatility to defend/play some more positions) with less FT accuracy and you have yourself Lebron... both were also point-forwards with ridicilous vision/passing skills.... Bird was a guy that could kill you without scoring anything, Durant is no such guy....

One thing about the Bird vs. Magic rivalry is that they entered the league at the same time, thus they progressed, reached their primes, and peaked around the same time. LeBron has a four year head start on Durant. Right now LeBron is at his peak while Durant is in the early stages of his prime and probably not as good now as he will be 2-3 years down the line; meaning we'll probably never see the best version of Durant and LeBron at the same time. It could get very close to that, though, over the next couple of seasons.

However, if they meet in a few more Finals, and Durant and the Thunder win one or two of them, their rivalry will definitely be in the same neighborhood of the Bird and Magic rivalry.

Bird and Magic was different because of the timing, and what they did for the game.

That said, Durant vs. LeBron is shaping up to be a great rivalry, especially if their teams continue to cross paths in the finals. However, for it to be a real rivalry, Durant needs to beat LeBron one of these times.

I think there are a few things that are missing from the Lebron-Durant rivalry in comparison to Bird-Magic:
- OKC and Heat don't have any kind of historic rivalry
- OKC and Heat both don't have anything close to the fan base of Celtics and Lakers
- Magic and Bird rivalry started before entering the NBA, playing against each other in the highest rated college basketball game of all time
- in the NBA, there were a lot of story-worthy tidbits around both, like Magic playing center in game 6 of the finals of his first season, Bird's whole college drama, Bird's trash talking etc. that seem to be missing from KD and Lebron.

So, while KD and Lebron might end up as good as or better than Bird, I don't think they'll ever have a rivalry that's as interesting and story-worthy as the Bird-Magic rivalry was.

Even if a situation occurs where they take turns besting each other on-court, it really won't have the same historical significance. The Bird-Magic rivalry brought the NBA into the national spotlight. Not only that, but they were polar opposites in a way, black against white, Magic representing the glitz and glamour of hollywood while Bird represented the average joe lower-middle class, that added to the appeal of the rivalry along with playing for the NBA's most heralded franchises.

Plus oncourt Bird and Magic hated each other, but respected at the same time. Durant and Lebron, by contrast, spend their summers working out together. Totally different dynamics at play, which is why to this day the Bird and Magic rivalry is the most important in nba history, perhaps rivaled only by Wilt-Russell but those two didn't battle in the national spotlight like Magic and Bird did.

No, I don't think they will ever reach the level of that rivalry. Magic/Bird went beyond basketball. Their rivalry started in college, they had great storylines, they represented different facets of the American society, and they both had tremendous personalities (Magic the fun loving happy go lucky guy, Bird the ruthless killer and trash talker). Durant and Lebron aren't interesting enough as people nor do they have the history to reach that kind of rivalry.

The only games that received much national coverage in the 60's was the Celtics against whatever team Wilt was on. Wilt v Russell was the league's biggest rivalry and attraction from the day Wilt entered the league.

It does in some way. Lebron is the all around player and Durant is the sharpshooter. But Bron is closer to magic than Durant to Bird. Bird's IQ was off the roof. Durant plays with heart but he's not the smartest player out there. Bird also lacked much athleticism and height advantage over his defenders, Durant's combination of height, reach and speed makes him difficult to guard.

yup definitely. But replace magic with jordan coz that who durant is a pure scorer. But anyways magic and jordan are the same coz they both are pures. Thats why those 2 are the GOATS. Either pure pg or pure scorer. So its a battle again of a pure versus an all around player and I can see durant winning this. Despite the stats, magic/jordan/durant are more impactful players as evidenced by their higher off rtg compared to bird/lebron/oscar.

No its not the same for many reasons. There are many factors which made the Bird/Magic rivalry so important to the growth of the NBA.

*Timing - Bird and magic came up in college at the same time. They also clashed in the championship game and Magic won.

*Race - Lets be honest...Bird was the great white hope and many white people rooted for him because he was white as many blacks and other minorities rooted against him because he was white...

*The Boston/LA comparison - This added on to the racial imagery that was used to promote this rivalry. Boston was supposedly blue collar hard working town that contrasted with the bright lights and flashy showtime of Los Angeles. This pulled as many people to each side as the race issue.

*The fact that they traded dominance over the years - There wasnt really a period where one went on a extended period of dominance over the other. Magic won the matchup in college. Bird was rookie of the year, but magic won a title and was finals MVP.. And obviously the way they traded titles over the years. The argument was never truly settled, and Im sure that is the way the NBA likes it

great rivalry, but alot of it was circumstance and timing. I would appreciate the NBA and stern a little more if they stop trying to recreate old moments and help the NBA build new ones.. Durant and Lebron are not like Bird & Magic, but if we have a little patience and sit back and enjoy their careers? we may see something just as entertaining.
