I would refer to the pricing system determined by the market for that make/model/trim and condition. If it's only worth $32,000 on the market but you think you're sly by asking $40,000, then of course, you take that offer. If the market price is $40k, you would be giving $8,000 charitably away, and that is dependent on the buyer and seller's relationship, as well as their situations.
Now, if you're asking $40k for something in full belief it's worth 40k, but you're dead wrong because you were going by bad/outdated information, or using the high end of the market(which sometimes is merely the exception), and all of your offers are considerably lower, then you have to correct your own figure and become realistic.
