Default World's biggest unsolved mysteries:the Voynich Manuscript

I recently stumbled on a article about this manuscript and decided to share it with ISH. What astonishes me is that until this day nobody has yet to decipher it.

Quote:
The Voynich manuscript, described as "the world's most mysterious manuscript",[3] is a work which dates to the early 15th century (14041438), possibly from northern Italy.[1][2] It is named after the book dealer Wilfrid Voynich, who purchased it in 1912.
Some pages are missing, but the current version comprises about 240 vellum pages, most with illustrations. Much of the manuscript resembles herbal manuscripts of the 1500s, seeming to present illustrations and information about plants and their possible uses for medical purposes. However, most of the plants do not match known species, and the manuscript's script and language remain unknown and unreadable. Possibly some form of encrypted ciphertext, the Voynich manuscript has been studied by many professional and amateur cryptographers, including American and British codebreakers from both World War I and World War II. As yet, it has defied all decipherment attempts, becoming a famous case of historical cryptology. The mystery surrounding it has excited the popular imagination, making the manuscript a subject of both fanciful theories and novels. None of the many speculative solutions proposed over the last hundred years has yet been independently verified.[4]

Quote:
Theories abound about the origin and nature of the manuscript. Some believe it was meant to be a pharmacopoeia, to address topics in medieval or early modern medicine. Many of the pictures of herbs and plants hint that it many have been some kind of textbook for an alchemist. The fact that many diagrams appear to be of astronomical origin, combined with the unidentifiable biological drawings, has even led some fanciful theorists to propose that the book may have an alien origin.

One thing most theorists agree on is that the book is unlikely to be a hoax, given the amount of time, money and detail that would have been required to make it.

Big deal. When I was 5, I wrote a book about Giraffes. 8 pages and the only word that could be deciphered was "Giraffe."

Not if you have schizophrenia. My friend was hospitalized in a mental health facility with psychosis. He said he met a guy in there that was constantly working on an excel document that included every variable of his life so he could figure out when he would die and how to get to "other levels of reality." It was very extensive apparently.

ooh... interesting theory... i like it.

hadn't heard that before as a possible explanation for voynich. a combination of long dedication, rational intent, and mental illness. maybe not as rare a combination as may seem at first blush...

I don't think it is far beyond serious consideration. I have watched a documentary on this manuscript before and the conclusions were fairly underwhelming. Essentially it is considered a hoax or a bizarre horticulturist document.

Schizophrenia and epilepsy could probably account for most divine revelations.

I could imagine a crazy person doing that without a problem. The botanical descriptions not matching any known specimens is the biggest tip that it's either a hoax or the dude was insane; to me at least.

but you've got to realize that during this time period paper & writing utensils weren't an every day item. Only the elite usually ever wrote anything down. Somebody with mental healthy issues especially in that time period most likely would be poor, and would not require the skill or training it would take to draw those images.

Serious. I used to read alt.conspiracy on Usenet years ago. People would come up with seriously entertaining (albeit batshit insane) theories. I always found it a bit interesting how people can string together the most benign details into something bigger.

Yeah I heard of this multiple times - because Voynich is of Polish-Lithuanian origin, and lived in a bad as region for that.

There's a cracked.com skim-take on it, and few other issues:

Reading this thread idea of mental ill person doing this, I found it particularly appealing. I can definitely see that... Good call!
