R & B is really boring, at least to me anyway.
Pop, pop-country, alternative/indie rock, "clean" hip-hop/rap...whatever. Just no to RnB would save the halftime show.

That said, They should bring back Usher. Even though he played recently at the 2010 ASG.
It's just a matter of standards. Kesha is horrible. I would expect horrible. Alicia Keys is a legend, I expect her to know her strengths and weaknesses by now after being on a major level for over a decade.
Her dancing skills did not get her here, or keep her at the position she's at.
Also:
WTF was up with her blatant advertising? The Reebok sneakers? The HEADPHONES THAT HER DANCERS HAD AROUND THEIR NECKS!

I wish.
It's mostly old Gen-X folks, or early Gen-Y folks like myself at their shows.
Their music actually don't generate new younger fans like other bands do. i.e. Foo Fighters, Tool, 311, Metallica, Sublime, Nirvana, ect. Last two bands have been inactive for over a decade and a half but still generate new young fans.
IDK, something about Pearl Jam music that doesn't strike a cord with post-90's kids. Their last album, Backspacer, they kinda tried a New Wave, Pop/Garage Punk sound which got them a bit popular again but I hated that record.

Bro...
Cell phones in the air = waving your phones so that the stream of light in the audience replicates the artistry that was originally instilled in concert performances back when everyone smoked pot at shows and had lighters to wave simultaneously.
Not that you're wrong about the generation of youth obsessing over capturing the moment rather than living the moment, but you're example was SO off in explaining that generational disease I couldn't help but facepalm and laugh
