Think about a pick up game. There are 40 players, and you have your 8 teams of 5 each. Throughout the years you play each other, multiple times. You pretty much know each team much better as opposed to playing against more teams.

Now make it 140 players and 28 teams of 5 each, much different now right? Didn't even mention the extended travelling yet for professionals. If he had won like 3-4 rings, probably wouldn't even be mentioned. But he won 11 so rightfully so hes up in the top 10.

And no, every team shouldnt have to be loaded because all you damn heard about was celtics-lakers. As opposed to today, Spurs, Heat, Thunder, Knicks, Chicago, Indiana, etc...

They other teams know him better as well, it goes both ways.

and remember we are talking about the player who at his age today can still watch tape and remember exactly what play they ran back in college. This man was a basketball genius he would dominate in any era.

You have to go back to 1961 to find an 8 team league. Do you guys look up anything, or just come on here winging it?

The NBA has always had great athletes even in as far as the 60's. People are retarded here. He was a great defender, rebounder, and leader. But he's not in the level of Wilt, Kareem, and some other centers. He was on stacked teams..a dynasty. Teams that had 4-6 HoF'ers at a time. Winning 11 championships was not an easy feat...(Petit and Wilt got 1 each during the Celtics run), but having teams with so many HoFers really makes things go smoother. I wish NBA TV would have specials on other players..like Wilt, Nate Thurmond, Rick Barry, Hayes, McAdoo, etc.

It so hard to judge eras...especially eras that we did not see.

Just hearing that story about how Russel basically invented shot blocking....isn't that crazy???!!!

Give the man his dues.

They had multipe HOFers before he joined, yet they nevr sniffef a title. On draft day, he was traded for 2 HOFers, Ed Macualey and Cliff Hagan. That team won one title in 58 wth Pettit as Russell was playing hurt. After Russell retired, Celticsmissed the playoffs with a below .500 record.

Guaranteed if you replace Russell with Dwight back on those dynasty 60's Celtics teams they'd kill the league every year. Dwight would probably average 40/25 back in those days.

Really? You guarantee it? Let's build this and find out once and for all.

I dont think Bill Russell is overrated.. He's an all time greats and one of the nba pioneers, a top 10 player of all time.. But dude becomes overrated when people try to rank him higher than Kobe.. How dare people rank him over Kobe when he's a Poor Mans Joel Anthony at best.. I know he's the best in his era but theres no way that dude can play in the modern era that are composed of tall, strong and athletic players..

Just a friendly reminder to all the fans of the weak era.. 5 foot white boys aka 50's 60s players were already extinct in the nba so guys please move on and stop living in the past..
