Karl Malone says he'd rather start a team with Scottie Pippen than Michael Jordan

Our take: The Jazz's battles with the Chicago Bulls are legendary, but Jazz stars Karl Malone and John Stockton were Dream Team-mates with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. In a Wednesday appearance on the Dan Patrick Show, Malone explained why he'd rather start a team from scratch with Pippen on his side instead of MJ:
"I would have to start my team with Scottie Pippen," he said. "This is why I would take Scottie: Do you remember the time that Michael retired? I watched Scottie Pippen when the Chicago Bulls weren't really good and Scottie led that team in every statistical category, and I just remembered that. Plus, he's a guy who could care less about scoring. He wants to stop the best player on the other team. That would have been pretty cool, to see Scottie guarding Michael."

With Malone alone + scrubs/role players? I think he's right. Jordan would take away alot of Malone's production and it would make the team less effective. With Stockton at the point it would take away alot of Pippen's game.

Basically is like Lebron. So if Lebron was on the same team as Jordan, he'd just be a Pippen. No wonder why Malone wants him.

I know this is an old topic and all, but I think Malone also said that because he wants to be the #1 option/best player on his team. If Jordan was selected instead, he wouldn't be either.

If you are a superstar and/or used to be the man of your team then Pippen would be a much better complementary player.... Jordan (same goes with Lebron considering what Malone said the same thing there) makes anybody else a complementary player... :)

Except this Pippen would be the Jordan version of the Pippens.... they would still co-exist/complement eachother equally well or even better... but that Pippen would battle Jordan for who the leader/best player of that team is and who the best player in the world is, hence also battle for the MVPs/FMVPs etc. aswell....
Which kindof explains why Malone would take Pippen over Lebron aswell...

It's not about complementary. Magic is not a complementary player, but while he could be a 27PPG scorer he's first and foremost a playmaker. He could very well average 10PPG if he had Malone and Worthy on his team. And he'd average some insane number of assists.
Pippen could be the best player on the team but he doesn't have to be your leading scorer. Malone is the 2nd leading scorer in NBA history. Why would he want the best scorer ever to be on his team? Pippen does not have to be his sidekick.
