I believe it is more the dribbling and illusion of athleticism when players today cover more steps per dribble. The bounce is higher and often a hesitation or carry. It's only a matter of time before all available footage is released. Now on iTunes store KAJ's debut vs Detroit in 1969 is available among some other excellent games, including Pistol Pete's debut.

Yes! I spent the $20 on all those games when they were first released a month or two back.

It is incredible to think there's a lot of footage we haven't seen, and it's great to know that soon it'll all be online once they finish their archiving project in a few years.

Does anyone have any sources as to the changes in traveling and palming violations from the 40's-80's?

It's clear just from video where and why the changes started to take place, but are there any first hand accounts? I know that in one of the books in my library(either Mikan's or Mikkelsen's autobiography) one of them makes a funny comment regarding Bob Cousy. Something like, "Bob Cousy was one of the greatest players I've ever seen(even if the refs let him get away with plaming)"

It was very hard to watch and a lot of those great players in the past are "Era-specific" players. They only excel at their particular era and their games do not translate over any other eras after it.

CavsFTW,

Do you still have that video up showing Jerry West being called for a palming violation by doing a routine crossover by today's standards?

Willie Wise also get's called for palming/carrying during the 1972 ABA vs NBA game I may upload a new vid shortly that shows both.

Keep in mind though, this doesn't mean players *couldn't* (somewhat) cross people over back then, or diplay a decent looking handle. This only means it was much more difficult to pull off because if your hands drift too far down the sides of the ball the refs are more likely to call you for it. There are a few jab-step plays by Archie Clark in particular, and one by Connie Hawkins too that are questionable no-calls. But like I said earlier in the thread, the league was already starting to loosen it's grip on tight ball handling calls in the late 60's and early 70's.

You can't face up your opponent and then throw the throw the ball 4 feet in front of you. That is an obvious palming.

Today guys do palm but they would get called for it if they threw the ball out like that.

You poor thing, don't even understand what exactly the problem was or why do you

It isn't how far West throws the ballfrom left to right, that isn't the violation at all dum dum - and it wouldn't be today either. The violation is when he puts his hand on the side of the ball in order to begin changing the balls direction. It's the exact same hand-on-the-side-of-the-ball play (IE crossover) Tony Parker makes w/o getting called for violation here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQe6-utQ3QU

Not only do players get away with palming today, it's actuall become the staple form of dribbing now and we see it every posession. It is differing RULES like this that explain the "evolution of the game" more so than anything else.
