Default Video games: Today's standard = everyone is a winner

Multi-player games these days, especially FPS are so watered down to make everyone feel like a winner. Granted, no one likes getting their ass kicked in a game, so the developers came up with a great way to keep even the worst players interested by creating a reward system that is not based on how well you do, but how much time you put into the game. A kid can walk away feeling that he's accomplished something.

Unfortunately for those of us that enjoy the competitive aspect and challenge of multiplayer games or any game in general, this sucks. Take Halo 4 for instance. The game has no ranking system, just levels based on how much experience that you acquire from playing. It's frustrating to up against a team of level 130's that have 200 hours invested into the game to your 15 hours and at the end of the game, they all have a negative kill/death ratio and you finish with something like 20/3. How is this fun for players looking for a challenge and want to be matched up with players of equal skill, and why the hell do people suck so bad when they've played that much!?

Halo 2 and 3 had a ranking system based on how good you were, but they decided to do away with it because too many kids were feeling bad about themselves because they couldn't level up. COD is no different.

As pointed out in the NES thread, games back then were hard and actually took skill and were a fun challenge. Not every kid on the block could beat every game like today. Some games actually took skill, and kids balanced their time. Even the most devoted gamers would be seen outside on the basketball court. These days? Forget about it. Games these days simply reward kids who suck at them by giving them new unlockables and leveling up based on how much time they put into the game, not how well they do.

It's a brilliant marketing tool which has allowed game developers like 343i to capitalize on a bigger audience, and they embraced the concept of "it's only a game". "It's supposed to be fun, not frustrating."

It's all about the $

OP is telling the truth..

I remember growing up going to the arcade where you got to put you name up when you had the highest score...

Kids would run and check punch out or asteroids to see if their name was still tops..

not every kid could reach that level, but if you did? you'd be hyped, and ready to play again to regain it if you had fallen to #2

The new installments of Ghost Recon and Hitman are ridiculously easy and simple compared to their predecessors.

Again:

A handful of games =/= the gaming industry.

If it bothers you that much about Halo 4 go find a different game.

Sadly this is entirely true.

Bungie even said they did away with ranks based on skill because too many people got made fun of.

Sidenote: H4 is coming out with ranks based on skill this Monday, April 8th. The catch? You can't view them in-game, you have to go to their website. So yeah they're still trying to project fragile pussays' egos.

arcade games were rigged to be unfairly hard so you had to keep pumping quarters into the machine.

they weren't making that shit hard to entertain you, they wanted you to keep paying to play.
