And somewhat related...

I always get a laugh out of people talking up the bill of rights as justification for isregarding public safety....when they only know 2 amendments.

Came up recently. Guy I know(not a bad guy...hes in the navy...works with me) was talking about his second amendment rights and the importance of the constitution. I asked him if he knew the third....or the 4th. I didnt ask 5th...but I bet he wouldnt have known that either without taking a moment to think about it.

An awful lot of them are know nothing clowns who like to shoot....and will wrap whatever they feel they can around it to protect the ability to do it.

The first amendment doesnt even apply in matters of public safety...eventually the second wont either. We are not in the world they were meant for and people are only gonna look the other way while nutjobs shoot places up for so long. You cant stop crazy people totally.

You can...eventually...limit access to weapons powerful enough to go on massive rampages. Which is the least a reasonable society should expect.

The whole gun problem is really overblown.

Cancer and heart disease, obesity, etc. Those are our big problems. We should be banning refined carbohydrates if anything.

No, but they kill a lot more people than guns do. And isn't that the important thing? Saving lives?

No, the point is reducing violent mass murder and the fear of said acts. You can choose not to eat a Big Mac.

I think the fear of violent mass murder can be reduced by reminding people that it's an incredibly rare occurrence and it's disproportionate representation in the news media doesn't make it more likely to happen to you.

Heart disease though? Much more pressingly common.

I don't get the "we need guns to stop govt tyranny" angle anymore because:

1) US servicemen and women aren't going to use the force of the military to openly oppress their fellow citizens
2) The govt would use much more subversive techniques than open conflict to exercise power

Gun rights for protection against criminals makes a lot more sense.

What don't you get. You don't get clogged arteries by walking into the crossfire of an armed robbery.

I think banning certain types of foods and nutritional items puts the govt on a pretty slippery slope. However, if the US goes to fully socialized medical insurance (or even as govt medical expenditures rise), then it will be tough not to recognize the financial merit of it.

How often do you walk into the crossfire of an armed robbery? Compare that to how often you get clogged arteries.

It's tough to worry about the former when it's put into perspective. It's like flying. Scary, but for the most part very safe.

I actually agree. The "refined carbohydrates" bit was tongue in cheek. It obviously touched a nerve in this thread though. It's hard to give the gun arguments on either side their just due when they're so emotionally charged.

Frankly, the future of the medical and food industries renders the point of projection almost moot. Fully "socialized" (really, broadly available) healthcare is in our future and technologies in the pipeline right now are going to make it easier than they think.

The logistics start to look a lot different when everyone's got a doctor in their smart phone.
