Default 2000 Honda Insight or 2003 Civic Hybrid

Need opinions... anyone ever own either?

Background info: Looking to spend around 4-6k with mileage 80-150k. I don't drive far but will do if i have a vehicle with great mpg. Both of these vehicle get between 40-70 mpg and so i can pay for both in two years with savings.

Replacement batteries are expensive, around 1700, but both vehicles run without the battery if needed.

But the battery itself has a 3-year 30k warranty which will allow me to save 1800 each year for the following two years. This essentially pays for the vehicle itself. Whatever i get out of it the next year or any time after that is cash in the pocket.

I like the new insight myself, but there are a few things that i dont like.

1. It's out of my price range, 18k which is more than 4 folds my limit.
2. its four door - more than i need.
3. mpg are a lot worse then the first gen.

I'm not familiar with the EV conversion as much as i should be if i want a part-electric vehicle. But i want a vehicle that can be both electric and gas that way incase one fails, i still have the other.

I've thought about CNG, but i don't know where i am going to be a few years from now so i can't risk purchasing a vehicle that relies on specialty gas stations.

I know nothing about the Insight, but I would be pretty wary of buying a hybrid from its second year of production. If you are considering that direction, I would spend some time scouring the internet checking up on how severe/expensive the common problems it has would be. Honda is a great manufacturer, but I'd guess there were probably some fairly serious kinks they didn't have quite worked out in 2000.
