Default Michael Jordan's defense on Sarunas Marciulionis 1992 Olympics

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2ckZBLdZPA

Quote:
Michael Jordan, coming off eighteen holes of golf, volunteered for the challenge of guarding Sarunas Marciulionis (#13) in the semi-finals of the 1992 Olympics by telling Chuck Daly not to worry about it. Now years later everybody remembers the game for how Michael didn't even let Marciulionis get the damn ball. Pay attention to the off-ball defensive pressure MJ puts on Sarunas.

Michael scored 21 points, had 6 steals, 4 assists and 2 blocks. Meanwhile, Sarunas's line of 20 points, 8 assists, 4 steals and 7 turnovers doesn't look that bad. However, only 5 of those points came when Michael was guarding him (that's approximately for 20 minutes). He absolutely feasted on Clyde Drexler to the point that Michael chewed Drexler out for letting him score on one particular occasion.

August 6, 1992.

MJ and Kobe are both two of the best ON BALL defenders of all-time. MJ just the superior all around defender, specifically help defense and off the ball defense ... as well as defensive effort in general.

But Kobe when he wants to is right there with the best on ball defenders I've ever seen: MJ, Pip, GP, Dumars, Kidd, Iguodala, Sefalosha, Hinrich, Alvin Robertson, Eddie Jones, etc.

But you're absolutely right. MJ's and Kobe's role on Team USA in their prime was as gritty, lock down defenders. Kobe on the USA team in 2007 was the reason they started playing elite pressure defense again ... and started blowing teams out the way we used to do.

MJ did the same thing for the '92 team. Locking down people defensively. MJ and Pippen made Kukoc cower with fear in their first matchup.

Kobe locked down resident 6th man of the year at the time, Leonard Barbosa to under 10 points in a tournament game v.s. Brazil in 2007. If I remember correctly, Barbosa was so frustrated, that one could spot tears in his eyes near the end of the game.

That's why you can never compare superstar's and their defensive effort, with resident role players who only have to play defense and not carry near the load offensively. Because when an elite superstar focuses on defense, they are AMAZING.

I still remember in the 2008 Olympics LeBron giving Dirk Nowitzki absolute FITS. Why? He didn't need to do anything offensively for us to win. So he focused all his energy on that side of the floor.

And make no mistake, Sarunas could play. He was a smooth lefty guard, who was deceptively quick, nice handle, and money jump shot. MJ locked this dude down, in straight handcuffs.

Shame Drexler's bum ass let him off the hook and allowed him to round out his own personal box score.

Man that was fun to watch. Jordan's shot, when on, was deadly and smooth. That pull up jumper is classc. I mean look at the form and follow through. Jordan put in the some work on that "J". Thanks for sharing that youtube clip.

Marculionis would've dropped 40 on Kobe by halftime.

18 rounds of golf didn't stop MJ from dominating.

State of Utah poisoning MJ's pizza didn't stop MJ from dominating.

Was Sabonis in his prime there or was he already been hit by injuries at that point?

Good question. I know that he suffered some issues with his achilles tendons around the mid-1980s. But then he had a time where he played for Real Madrid and was putting up 22/10 type numbers for a few years while playing over across the pond. I would say that he was in his prime.

I loved Marciulionis' euro-step. He made it look so smooth and pretty. From what I can remember watching some older tapes, it seemed as if he was the first player to really have that as a go to move. Loved his behind the back dribbles going to the ring too.
