Default questions for rufuspaul, resident dentist

(1.) What kind of toothbrush and toothpaste do you use?
(2.) What kind of mouthwash do you use?
(3.) Are these special edition 'Total Care' and 'Ultraclean' Listerines worth the extra money?

For years, I thought it was okay to use a toothbrush with medium bristles, but my dentist told me I was doing it all wrong.

Soft only.

Why do they even make medium?

You didn't waste your own dentist's time with these questions. I really hope Paul trolls you.

On the other hand, this is the kind of shit KevinNYC logs in for. He's always looking for new opportunities to teach and look informed on any subject.

Didn't think to ask. Generally not looking to spend more time in the dentist's office than I have to. Even if I had, ever heard of getting a second opinion?

rufuspaul seems to be pretty helpful and likes to spread dental health around the world, so I hope he wouldn't troll.

I have noticed just personally that my teeth stay whiter with soft bristles. Harder brushes scrub the enamel off which makes your teeth stain easier.

Good observation. I've had patients that are so obsessed with white teeth that they scrub them to death. When the enamel gets thinner the tooth takes on more of the shade of the dentin layer which is usually yellowish.

I recommend soft bristles but a lot of the wear can be due to technique. Fine grit sand paper can do the same job as coarse grit, it just takes more effort.

Why no mouthwash? Is there a detriment or is there just no added benefit? I thought it was a good way to combat gingivitis.

I figured the special editions were a waste, because the extra ingredient added is minute.

Thanks for your help.

I just read it could potentially increase oral cancer risk and makes a person who abstains from drinking alcohol intake more alcohol than an average alcohol drinker.

I've been killing myself slowly all these years.

I will prescribe a chlorhexidine mouthwash for patients with chronic gum disease but for most people brushing and flossing are enough. If people want to use mouthwash that's fine, but it's not a substitute for flossing, which is what people want it to be.
