Default Lakers become more defense-oriented

The Lakers rarely met Mike D’Antoni’s initial expectation that they’d average 110-115 points a game namely because they had too many overlapping injuries to count and a veteran-laden roster that doesn’t have the quickness to meet such demands. But as they prepare for Game 2 of their first-round series Wednesday against the San Antonio Spurs, the Lakers have morphed into the identity that former coach Mike Brown once preached.

They’ve become a methodical, grind-it-out team intent on winning ugly. The Lakers have plenty of changes to make, including how to handle San Antonio’s double-teams in the post, improving their Game 1 shooting accuracy (41.1 percent) and ensuring better health for Steve Nash (right hamstring). But the Lakers still sounded in high spirits, mainly because of their recently strong defense. They held the Spurs in Game 1 to a 37.6 percent clip, marking the third consecutive game the Lakers held opponents to under 40 percent shooting.

The phrase "more defense-oriented" can be taken very loosely. That could be moving up a couple spots from the bottom of the pack, lol. If the Lakers were so defense oriented why would Dwight not even be in consideration for DPOY? Really, every team takes their defense up a notch in the playoffs..... even the ones who aren't really good at it.

Not to defend D'Antoni and what he had changed,

but Dwight didn't start off as a good defensive player either this season. All of us were wondering what was wrong with him because he was playing like his childhood pet dog was run over senselessly by an 18 wheeler truck repeatedly (don't get any ideas). His defensive effort came late in the season and therefore was too late to be considered for anything.

Why else was he only All-NBA 3rd team this year? Because individually he just couldn't produce well with the back surgery recovery process.

A great defensive player can't do much without a coach working out the defensive rotations. Every single game...and usually all game you would see 2 guys rotate to the same player, leaving someone open. At first I would laugh but then I really felt sorry and embarrassed for the guys. 'Antoni never works on defense at all and has no business coaching an NBA team.

I guess you're right. At this age anyways I don't see him with much potential and room for improvement. He'd probably be a great assistant to work offense. And good point about a defensive player being unable to do it all by himself.
