Amare Stoudemire. I still remember the comparisons to Ben Wallace on draft night.

Patrick Ewing was supposed to be the next Bill Russell. He gradually became a jump shooter who was great on D...but not a defensive/rebounding player as much as a scorer.

And old scouting reports and draft talk on Shaq and Mutombo...it was said Mutombos offense was ahead of his defense and that Shaq would be a great defender out the gate but was raw on offense and needed time.

And odd as it sounds...Mutombo did average like 20/15 in his first month then 18 a game for most of the season. And Shaq did go hard blocking shots and rebounding early...but he was a scorer too. Even if it wasnt pretty.

Amare Stoudemire. I saw a video from the 2002 Draft and he was considered as the next Ben Wallace.

Jordan. Drafted mainly for offense, became one of the greatest defenders to ever lace them up.

Not the point. Jordan didn't end up becoming a better defender. He was always better on offense but became a terrific defender.

Shaq was raw. Always was. He was just too big for anyone to stop.

Mutumbo's numbers were a result of Westhead's offense.

He wasn't better at D!

Ewing's actually the first player who came to my mind upon seeing this thread.

Deshawn Stevenson.

One draft report compared him to.....Michael Jordan

Eventually settled in as a defensive player.

Tracy Mcgrady drew comparisons to Pippen prior to the draft and early in Toronto.

Recall, that he signed with Orland to complement Grant Hill. Few expected him to be the offensive force that he would go on to become.

Bruce Bowen was undrafted in 1993 but in college and even overseas as a pro, he was a "pure scorer" then he decided to change his game to be a defensive force.
