Beckham is a class act on and off the pitch. He threw away 5 years of his career though playing in the Micky Mouse league which I am sure he now regrets.

What were his reasons for playing here in the US anyway? Did he want to be the guy to make soccer big in the states?

Me being an American, non-soccer fan, he's definitely not the biggest sports star of the 00's to me. But objectively maybe he is.

He was washed up to play for a major club in a good league and he was offered a big paycheck in the US. No brainer.

The best kick taker (I mean any type of kick, free kicks, crosses, long passes) that I have ever seen and that's enough for me to

Dude put the ball wherever he wanted and exactly there.

He was never anywhere near the best footballer in the world but he has definitely been the most famous in the last 15 years.

As for global sport, I can't think of anyone bigger. Maybe Tiger Woods runs him close.

LeBron is a bigger sports star worldwide. Soccer isn't as popular in Europe as everyone makes it out to be.

lol forreal, I live in a European country and everywhere I have been soccer is the biggest sport in Europe.

I like Basketball much more but there is not a single person that doesn't know who Beckham is in Europe I can assure you a lot of people don't know who LeBron James is.

If we are talking about basketball player popularity I would have to rank it like this in Europe.

1.MJ
2.Kobe/Shaq

And then maybe LeBron.

Not sure if this is a joke. Someone will be saying Tony Parker next.

David Beckham is known all round the world, even people who do not like sport.
